Handgun sales sites?

I'm looking to purchase a 38cal revolver in the future months. I'm not finding decent guns or prices around here. I really want a 38 police special, either a Colt or a S&W. Anybody recommend a site?

I've looked at http://www.auctionarms.com

However you need a permit to purchase from there, plus I don't care for auctions very much.

TIA

Evan

If you are looking for a .38 special the best place to get such a caliber is from either a gunshow, or a pawn shop. The caliber is not very popular anymore, other than as a cheap round to put through a .357. A fair price for a Colt .38 with a smaller barrel is about $150 top, to about $80 average. The longer barrel, about 4" is more sought after, so comes at a higher price.. I have bought two longer barrelled .38s in the last couple of years, one for $140, the other for $50. both needed a little retouching, and working.. Tell me what weapon are you looking for specifically, and I will try find one for you..

You could look in the Shotgun news for one.

I'm just looking for a cheap revolver, I really don't care what brand it is or how good of shape it is. Just something to keep at the farm to shoot at varmints/pests/target practice.

I paid $400 for a brand new S&W Model 65 357mag. Never shot it, don't plan to either.

Ya, I'd appreciate it Theologian if you can find one, I'd take a cheap 357 if you found one of those. Just keep in mind, I'm not looking for a perfect gun, in fact the worse shape, the better. Just need'n one that's mechanically sound.

Thanks again

Evan

Um, this may seem like a silly question, but if you already have a .357 why not just get a box or two of .38 cal to shoot from it?

He doesnt want to shoot the 357 he has now. I am suprized that local gunshops dont have any resonable prices. Personally i would use the on you have rather than buying a new one. Ill look around on the web and see what i can find. Good luck and happy shootin at chebbys

I'm curious too, why don't you want to shoot the S&W Model 65 357mag. Isn't that just the stainless version of the Model 19? It's not like it's a collector's piece or anything. I could see, maybe if you had a Colt Python that had never been fired because Colt's unfortunately now are becoming collector's pieces. But a M65 is a cop's working gun. Shoot it.

Check around with some of the pawn shops. For a small fee, most licensed shops will purchase the gun for you. So, find the gun you want, have them buy it & sell it to you for that price plus an extra $10-$20 for "transaction fees".

>>However you need a permit to purchase from there.

What kind of permit are you talking about. An FFL? Or just a state permit? Does your state not have permits? Mine (MA) has some very tough gun laws. In fact the only NEW guns that can be purchased here are S&W. (I believe. The law was changed after I got out of the gun business.) That's what I get for living in a Liberal, Socialist state, I guess.

HEHE, Truthfully I have shot it, but it's to nice and new for what I'm gonna put it through. Really it's a toy for me. It's like using a brand new truck to haul a load of sand. Some people would do it, but not me.

Ya, my 65 is stainless, but I'm not sure if it's related to the 19 or not.

Monsta: I know the FFL's required, but not sure if there is any other permits required. I've boughten several guns from local shops, including a Mossberg 835 this past christmas. Other than a background check, I didn't have to wait 5 days.

Roger on that. I'd like to get a beater M94 Win or Marlin to hang on the saddle. Same reason. Anything that touches a horse gets dusty, rusty and crusty, LOL!

Patronize your local gun shops! Yes, you may have to pay a little more, but the proprietor needs to earn a living to keep the shop open. Trust me, you'll be sorry when he closes the shop because 90% of his customers decided it was more important to save a couple of bucks on shells at Wal-Mart. A good gun shop is a place you can get advice, hang out at, learn some things, and maybe even get your guns fixed (all good shops employ or have relationships with gunsmiths).

I know from personal experience that gun shops can't survive selling new guns. The price the distributor charges to the shop is often higher than the Wal-Mart's and Gander Mountain's of the world charge to the customer. Why? The big chain stores command big discounts, yes, but they also sell lots of new guns at a loss just to get people into the stores and buying all the higher margin items like clothing and ammo. Most small gun shops can only survive these days by trading in used guns and doing gunsmithing work.

It may cost you $50 more to buy that .38 from your local shop, but it'll be money well spent. Consider it an investment in your future as a happy gun owner.
