Question My Torino

I am new to this site and I wanted to get some answers about my car. I have A 1973 Gran Torino (I know its not a truck) and I just got a 1972 429 for it. I want to know exactly what it is FE, BOSS, CJ, Or SCJ its block casting numbers are DOVE-9425B and the casting #'s on the heads are D2VE-AA. If someone could please tell me what this engine is I would greatly appriciate it.

It's not an FE- that's a whole different line of engines (390, 427,428, etc.)

You have a 1970 design version of the block, replaced by the 1971 D1VE; and 1972 heads. The heads are not Boss 429, CJ, or SCJ, but ordinary passenger car heads. Unfortunately, they are 1972 only, & are known as the worst 429/460 heads Ford made. They were an attempt to lower compression & reduce emissions; but since they have no quench area they are very prone to detonation. The earlier C8VE, C9VE, & D0VE heads have a much better chamber design; the 1973 D3VE heads have a very similar design chamber to these three, but larger, to lower compression. Good engines can be built using any of these four castings; the older ones are getting a little pricey sometimes, but the D3VEs are usually dirt cheap and with the right piston will work just as well on a street engine.

On the up side, the block is a good one (assuming its in good shape).

Hope it helps.

Nope, just a regular old 429, Nothing special other than being a good motor, I think D2VE heads are junk, And C8VE C9VE D0VE D3VE are heads that youd be after.

hopping down to the 385 series forum and doing some reading and searches will garner tons of info
