I emailed MSD three times in the last 10 days about my problem with my new MSD 6a (see thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/80_96/4393.html )
and still no answer.
Did any of you guys ever contact them? Did they respond? Do I have to call them?

Probably your best bet to call them. Anyone can always say they never got the email......I've run into that before, even though I sent them three! (Not with MSD though) The one time I contacted them abuot the MSD TFI coil, I called them on the phone.

I got the same thing when I tried to get information on the white face guages for the ford rangers that look identical to the guages in my 88 model. I finally got mad, and sent an email to eveyone listed on their website! Boy oh boy, I finally got an answer! And a faxed copy of the guages!

1988 F-150, SWB, 5.0 EFI (formerly 4.9 EFI), M5OD 5 speed, 3.08 gears, Summit shorty truck headers, Custom built Flowmaster exhaust system. Force 4 LP6000 lightbar, Federal signal PA-300 100 watt siren, Icom IC-V100 50 watt mobile radio.

1965 F-100 (just purchased 1/18/01), SWB, 390, C-6 auto. Dual exhaust, Not much else to do to it.

Can see both below.

I contacted MSD via email 8 weeks ago about the 6A I bought. They got back to me within 24 hours. I've had very good service with their products. (list below) What kind of problem are you having? I'm going to take a guess and ask, are you having hard starting problems with the 6A? Once it's started it runs fine?

This was the issue with my 6A.

Actually, no. As described in the thread:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/80_96/4393.html
It starts fine, but stumbles and eventually dies at idle. It starts rough, then almost dies, picks up RPMs to run rough again, stumble, almost dies, picks up RPMs and so on for a couple of times until it eventually stumbles to a halt. It seems to drive halfway ok, though (but I just drove it around the block). It'll stay running if I have the foot on the gas pedal, too. I've never bolted the unit down, but that shouldn't make much of a difference, should it?
I guess I'll have to call them...

Looks like you have if wired incorrectly, looking at #6 note in your thread. If you have the positive wire from the 6A box going to the starter relay it WILL NOT WORK RIGHT. The starter relay is a switch. You have to wire the RED wire from the 6A to the positive side of the battery directly. I tried the same thing first, and that was causing my problem.

Red to positive side of battery (directly) and black wire to negative wire junction block on fender apron next to battery (or also directly). If wires are to short to reach, lengthen them. I had to lengthen mine for it to reach. It is imperative that you connect the positive (red 6A wire) to the battery and NOT starter relay switch.

After re-wiring mine this way it worked EXCELLENT.

Let me know if this helps. I will email you the response I got from MSD. So, check your email.

Sorry, can't e you the MSD note. Already deleted.

Let me know if my suggestion works. Your negative wire should be ok going to chassis ground but the red wire needs to be moved to the positive side of battery.

It's working!!
MSD finally contacted me last night and also suggested to go to the battery posts directly. So I cleared the computer once again, hooked it up directly to the pos. and neg. battery posts (not to starter relay post, not to chassis) and it worked!
It doesn't make much sense to me, as physically it shouldn't make much difference, but now it's working so I don't care!
Thanks for all your help!!

Bjoern,

If you are able to give your opinion on the 6A and its performance or lack thereof please do. I am considering this as one of my next upgrades.

Thanks,

Good to hear that it's working. I think MSD makes good products. They can't afford a dissatisfied customer. Forums like this would kill their market if the news got out about a bad product.

You might check out a couple of threads here about spark plugs. My experience has been that some later model Fords like only Autolites or Motorcrafts. Especially after the years 88 on up.

Just my .02 cents

Good luck

I'll drive it for the first time today! I'll post my subjective impressions. I'll get some gasmileage data and will let you know how well it really does.

Allright I've been driving it yesterday and today. I didn't notice much difference. In terms of starting if anything it's slightly worse (but it's always started really well - still does). I don't notice that it'd run any smoother, but I just reset the computer, so it's bound to run a little rough in the beginning. I do have the impression it picks up speed quite a bit faster, though. If that's not just my wishful thinking, I should see that as a mileage increase. I'll let you know as soon as I have the data.
