Rear end rummble at 60mph

I just aquired an 89 ford Club Wagon XLT and at highways speed between 60 and 70mph I'm getting a very noisy rumble from the back. I've tried shifting down a gear to see if was the tranny but it didn't change. The tires are new and it does not seem to be a tire balance problem (I know what these are like). I've had it into 1 shop and they don't have a clue what it is. Can anyone help?

The driveshaft may be out of balance or possibly a U-joint.

Has the vehicle ever been rear-ended? I had a ford ranger that had it's back end totalled, and when I got it back out of the shop it would start rumbling from about 65mph-up. The accident left the axle and driveshaft a little less than straight even after repair (which results in out of balance).

I have the same thing on my 95 F-150. It turned out to be the driveshaft yoke. I am going to pick it up in an hour, so hopefully with that and new u joints will fix. It was shaking bad at 55 and up. But in the last day or two, it would shake at all speeds. You could feel it in the steering wheel, and in the shifter as well.

Since you have a club wagon xlt do you have a two piece drive shaft? If so, the rumble noise could be coming from the center yoke bearing that is in between the two piece drive shaft.
