You are correct on the math, you might want to use a whole tank though and judge the figures using those numbers. I have found by just using a small portion of gas, the numbers are usually really bad... I get about 9 mpg with a 302 and 33" tires.
well also, i only drive like 3 miles a day, and those miles are up and down hills in my neighborhood, and like mabye 1/2 mile doing about 45-50, would that effect the mileage that much?
What size tires are you running? If they are not equivalent to stock height, have you recalibrated your speedo? This may not make tons of difference depending on how close you are to stock, but it all helps.
i have a 2.5'' lift on my 80' f350 with 32's and a 460 out of an 83'. the 460 is bored, balanced, and blueprinted with a performance cam and full long-tube headers, and im getting about 4 miles to the gallon. do you guys know how big both tanks are on my truck?
Ryan:
Yes, those tires should be the same size, or at least minimal difference in height.
Proud:
Your midship tank should be approx 18.2 gal and the rear should be 19 gal. I have dual tanks on my play truck with a 400M, and it takes about 75 bucks to fill it up. At about 8mpg highway and 1mpg in mud, 75 bucks don't last long!
3 miles a day is going to kill your milage because your never getting up to operating temp either. Plus you should probably change your oil more often if you drive like that all the time.
Put the fuel injector cleaner in you tank, or follow the directions if they're special.
I get about 12-14 doing mostly local driving with 32's on my stepside 4x4 and efi 302, stick with OD

My 86 F-250 4x4 has dual tanks, 19 gal each...I am getting 15.5 around town, 12.5 all highway. I have a 4 spd. manual w/granny (not sure what trans it is) and a 4.10 LS rear with a 351W HO.
You've got a lot of good info re: poor mileage. If you let it sit running to warm it up, that'll kill mileage too.
Seafoam can be found at selected auto parts stores and other venues I'm sure. 1/3 of the can goes in the fuel tank, 1/3 goes into the crankcase and the last 1/3 - you pull the hose off the brake booster and with the engine warm you quickly pour the remaining contents into the hose until it stalls the engine. Or shut it off as soon as you dump it all in. Let the truck sit for 20-30 min and restart it.
Do this out in the country - it smokes heavily and smells terrible. The neighbors will hate you and maybe call the fire dept. But the stuff does seem to help some engine conditions. Will it help your mileage? Maybe.
