cummins vs powerstroke

I have always heard that the Dodge Cummins is a half million mile motor. Just wondering does Ford make any claim as to what they feel the lifetime miles is of a PS. Just wondering because we just bought a PS and was just curious to see how it compared to the Cummins. Since we did buy a PS it is obvious that the PS is the one we feel is the better.

I'm also curious why Ford continues outsell everyone when the consensus is that the Cummins is a more reliable engine.

.....shoot....I just answered my own question....
I just bought a used PSD because I liked the cab better than Dodge. I also liked the looks over the others.

The motor was just and after thought. I really didn't care what was under the hood....

Regular maintenance can get the PSD to 300,000 if not further.

I believe that either or Ford or International has described the T444E as being built for an "average" lifespan of 250,000 miles. I don't know if "average" is ment to describe mean or median. Of couse it is going to depend on how it is cared for and how hard it is worked during those miles.

Someone posted about high milage PSD's a while ago and there were a LOT of responses with trucks with 3-500,000 on them - some even higher!!

The thing is - even if the Cummins might last longer - the truck it's put in sure won't. The Dodge IMO is just not as heavy duty as a Ford as far as the truck lasting the milage.

I agree here. My father in law has a 90' cummins that is still running with 500k but the body is toast. Things fall off all the time and the new Dodge crew cab still doesn't have as much room.

I have read lately that the PSD is good for 250-300k mi. prior to major work needing done and up to 400k if properly cared for and maintained.

I have a nieghbor who's got a '95 crew cab 4wd, completely stock with over 600K on it. He's just fixed the normal things that wear out / break and kept up with the maintainence.

I also know a concrete contractor the solved the issue by dropping a 6 cyl. turbo Cummins generator engine in his '93 F350, and he runs the tar out of it! He claims "best of both worlds".

I AM going to get 500K outta mine.....

Both engines are excellent. Before I bought my '00 F-250 PSD, I had both Dodge and Ford under consideration. It was all a matter of what came first. However, I think I'm happier with the Ford. If not because of the engine then because of the rugged good looks and battle ship dimensions of the body.

Battleship dimensions....

I love my 21' long truck!! It even dwarfs a Hummer!

He said HUMMER. J/K

No need to worry you gotta strong and tough motor. Every bit as good as the CTD. But you got a better truck as the FORD Chassis and body will far out last the dodge. Now do not even get me started on the Yuppie DURACRAP, and how its upping the price of diesel everywhere and how the piece of poo is gonna fall apart before a yugo and.........!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have 2 gas burners with 153K and 165K on them and they still go fine. I think it is all in the maintainence and nut behind the wheel. I am hoping to get near the 500K with my 99 PSD if the electronics don't break me first.

A good friend of mine owns a used truck dealer in my area. He had a '98 Dodge 3500 DRW Cummins and 5 speed he used to pick up trucks that he bought. The truck had 556,000 miles on it. Original engine, second trans.

IMO Chevy has a decent set up. Even though the Durapoo engine is made by 'cough' 'cough' Isuzu 'cough, it is still nonetheless dependable along with the Allison tranny. Now all Chevy has to do is change the styling of the truck. And no, I still wouldn't buy one!

Actually, Isuzu makes a pretty darn good diesel motor. But back to the point of this thread. Cummins is a good motor, but as previously stated, the rest of the truck is questionable. I have a few friends with Dodge trucks, and they have nothing but problems with them. Always back to the shop for ridiculous things that shoudn't be going on. All I can say is FORD.

I have no favorites. Even though I own a Super Duty, I still like the Dodge too. I have seen many problems with Super Duties. Not just Dodges. No matter how you look at it though, THEY ALL BREAK.
