I own a 95 f-250 3'' down pipe superchips multi-stage 4" lift 5 spd 4.10s first about the cummins starting better, well my powerstroke preheats the cummins in my timberjack which is a 5.9 everyday it is 10 deg or less and many times in northern vermont it gets to be 20-30 bellow zero. My powerstroke never fails me. I am a logger and there are times that I have crossed the scales with hardwood pulp that I have weighed over 22,000 pounds, my truck has 174,000 miles it has only had oil changes and a set of balljoints in that time plus a few little things. My friend has a 2000' 2500 club cab 5.9 that has never worked a full day in its life, and that truck has left him beside the road twice for stupid little things all this with less than 60,000 miles. My ford has made me a FORD man for life!!!
I have owned both and the only thing I miss from my Cummins is the fuel milage. I was getting 21 empty and 14 towing. It was a 2wd. An earlier post said that the Cummins b and C engines are the same they are not. I don't recall the displacement but the C is a bigger block engine.
I don't like the dodge but I went to a dealer and a 1 ton dually crew cab with cummins out the door would be less than 30K. Test drove it and it felt really nice was impressed but can't take the tiny crewcab. Ford can't touch that closer than 4-5k....

Ya get what you pay for that dodge body, chasis, tranny, etc are a POS
Just to put in my 2 cents. 321K on my '97 3/4 ton PSD. It starts well, pull's well (even with an automatic), and just plain does what it is supposed to. I put about 600 miles a week on it, and have so much faith in it that I keep forgetting to bring my cell phone with me. I really like the Cummins engine, and often get passed by Dodges pulling heavier loads than I do, but there is no doubt in my mind that I'll have 500k on this engine before I retire the truck. It does what I need it to, consistently, I can't think of a better reason to own a piece of equipment. My next truck will be another Ford diesel, only difference, I've learned not to buy unless it's 4wd.
The engine in the Dodge trucks is the same engine offered in the F-650/750, just different power ratings. Also the ISB, which is what is in the dodge is not the same as the ISC. The sizes go as followed, ISB-5.9, ISC-7.2, ISL-8.3, ISM-11.0, ISX-roughly 14.0.
I know that ford resigned the contract to let dodge continue using the Cummings about 5 years ago. Did dodge finally buy them out? I didn't think they had but I could be wrong. Ditto on the truck being crap! The Cummings is a fantastic engine but the truck can't hold it! The best all time diesel engine is a doytz(i know i spelled it wrong) the engine cost 20k but has a LIFETIME guarantee....not a single gasket on the entire motor. Very fine piece of machinery!
My 89 gasser 250 still was holding up well as a whole vehicle, even after 200k miles. Sure, the interior was beat, but 200k is a lot of inta/outta seat wear, etc. The main thing thet made me sell it was the disastrous 80's paint and the subsequent rust. Otherwise, the interior felt like home to me.

Well now this is interesting. I have never heard of this motor. Got a link?
I'm farmiliar with Deutz, I can't imagine any engine without any gaskets. The Ford-Dodge-"Cummings" story is a myth, I suspect the lifetime guarantee Deutz engine is as well.
The garrantee isnt a myth, my Uncle works on them, they mostly use them in helicopters but they also have truck models. The ford-cummings was true at some point, I had stock in dodge and it went up when they resigned the contract. I am just not sure what the present day contract/ownership deal is since I sold the stock 2 years ago. Thanks for calling me a liar though.
here is the site for duetz, http://www.deutz.de/framee.htm I couldn't find anyhting on the site garrantee, it may have changed or maybe they just do not sell directly to the public anymore. It's an awesome engine though!

there both good motors, i like the psd for the higher horsepower and a quicker truck. going to a small chassis medium duty 450-550 i still would run the powerstroke still plenty of power as long as your within the tow capacity. going to a full size class 7 chassis i prefer the DT466E cant beat the dependability and the fuel mileage, ford just didnt get things set up for multiple navistar engines. the cat is also a great motor but not known for fuel economy, my issue with CAT is the cost or repair there seems to be a premium on parts and very very little aftermarket. going into the heavy duty class 8 trucks im torn between the Detroit 60 series and the CAT twin turbo. im in the market for a class 7-8 truck soon to tow my horse trailer, want something with a sleeper, so someone can comfortably sleep while someone else is driving, cant decide between the motors......
