Ford used to have shares of Cummins stock, which Cummins bought back quite some time ago. The Cummins available in the 650 and 750 is not the same engine as the one found in the Dodge Ram, however, it may share some of the same parts, such as the engine block for starters.
my question is why is the psd and the cummins about equal when the psd is much bigger. i drove both trucks both the same in size and they seem to run the same the cummins has much more boost to the psd and the cummins sounds better , but i am ford all the way. i would not buy a dodge
Yes it can be ordered in a F550...but by the time you reach that size of truck, both the PSD and CTD are a bit underpowered, the CAT diesel is the better option.
Yes I have to chime in here too. My F-550 goes over any mountain pass I want and I only have to shift down once, maybe twice on the really steep hills pulling a 12,500lb 5th wheel. There's plenty of power there but what holds me back is the sound of the clutch fan kicking in and howling like crazy. I don't want to overwork it so I back out of the throttle until it quiets down.
You could order the Cummins in The 650 or 750, not in any of the 450s or 550s. Here's a good thought thoguh fellas....If Ford claims that the PSD is such a great engine, then why do they offer the Cummins in their larger trucks? If you think about it, International (maker of the PSD) manufactures engines big enough to fit the needs of the F-650/F-750 trucks, so why dosn't Ford offer an engine from International instead of Cummins?
I work at a Ford dealership, and the larger trucks can be ordered with either the PSD, a Cummins, or a Cat. The reason for this isn't because International doesn't have an engine that Ford could offer, they already have the PSD. The reason is simply marketing......offering fleet buyers the choice of an engine they are familiar or comfortable with.
Actually, they use a 5.9 Cummins in the pickups and a 5.9 in the bigger trucks, but the pickup version is a 5.9B, while the medium duty trucks is a 5.9C. Same size, heavy duty construction.
Thats good to here that they dont get too much better than us,,My friends with dodges, say the can get 20 ish but if you could get 27 that would be something!! I'd be lookinfg closely a dodge! thats better than a awd subaru!!
Not wanting to hi-jack this post, here is my reason for the v-10.
1. I will only drive about 8k miles a year.
2. psd will be 4k, +500$ incentives, so about 4.5k more espensive.
3. I know most of the problems are worked out but still nervous.
4. only about 2-5 mpg better, and diesel has no cost advantage at the pump.
5. Hp ~50+ , Torque -110 less Oh well
6. Tow ratings with manual on 450/550's about the same.
I don't like the dodge but I went to a dealer and a 1 ton dually crew cab with cummins out the door would be less than 30K. Test drove it and it felt really nice was impressed but can't take the tiny crewcab. Ford can't touch that closer than 4-5k....
I'm 150% positive that you cannot get a Cummins in the 250, 350, 450, or 550. Has to be 650 or 750. Anybody who thinks you can better go do some research.
