Hello everybody...first post! I am looking to buy a used 1998 thru 2003 Ford F250 Deisel truck. Which years had the good engine and which years the bad??? I know newer is almost always better but cost is keeping me from buying new.
All those years will have the 7.3 powerstroke. An excellent motor by any standards. '98 was the first year that had an intercooler, but I don't think you'll find a 'bad' one.
I dont think they made a 98 Super Duty, 03 Ford came out with the 6.0 diesel engine, I have the 03 6.0 PSD F-350 FX4 CC LB. Excelent truck! I added a 4 inch exhaust,AFE intake, SCMT and autometer guages.....Can you say rocket!!! I would highly recomend the 6.0 PSD.
I think 99' is the first year with the intercooler as well as the newer bodystyle. It is my understanding that Ford did nothing from 97' to 98' different.
I think I read once that they just sold off the 97's in 98 until the 99 was ready to go.
I beleive the new body style of the 99+ fords were supposed to be introducted in 98 but ford didn't quite have everything ready and finished up to do so. Therefore they introduced the truck in 99, and that is way some are early 98 builds. Look for a 99.5 and up. They have a better intake and a different turbo than the early 99's.
Thanks! Sounds like I need a '99 or newer for sure. I actually was looking at 2000 or newer so that works great! Is the 7.3 a good candidate for the banks 6 shooter?

Zimm
All the trouble they are having with the 6.0l leads me to believe I will be staying with my 2000, 7.3 for a while. I know a lot of people with banks kits on a 7.3 and they like them. From what I read, the intercooled 7.3(99-03) is the engine of choice for modification right now.
No dought the 7.3 is a proven motor but the 6.0 has more power and the people having problems are the minority. I`ve had some small problems with mine but all in all its been great, I`d buy another one!
6.0L has more power than the 7.3L??? I'm in the market for a used F-250/350 as well and I was tracking for a 7.3L thinking it gave me the most towing muscle?
I had a 7.3 with tuner, exh and intake. My 03 6.0 has the same power in the stock mode. Go test drive them both back to back, you`ll drive home a 6.0 PSD!!
Okay with that being said...What years were these stronger 6.0L's produced? I'm looking to move up from a 1994 F-150 5.8L to a '99-'03 F-250/350 CC. I'm looking to pull the trigger on the first good buy I come across. It's main mission besides utility work around the house, is to tow my 10k lb. powerboat/trailer combo on camping trips (meaining crap loaded in the bed too) and to poker runs down the road. Is the fuel economy better too?
Then you'll drive it to the mechanic. He, He...Just kidding 6.0 lovers. I'm new to the PSD as well, very new. I am currently in Iraq,so I haven't even driven my new truck yet, but my father-in-law just found what I was looking for and scooped it up for me, a 2003 F250 SD CC FX4 with the 7.3L. I had made a personal decision after researching quite a bit that the 7.3 was the way to go for me. My last truck was a real piece of poop Chebby, and I vowed 1)to never, ever own another Chevrolet, and 2) avoid any vehicle with a reputation for problems. I know that the 6.0 owners on here are going to tell you that the guys with problems are the minority, but let me just say that there were enough of them out there to scare me away. It only took me a few visits to these forums to realize that in the 6.0 section there are alot of guys looking for help with some sort of mechanical problem, while in the 7.3 section there are a lot of guys with Big Ol' Grins rolling along at 200,000+ miles more concerned with what size tire will look better on their truck. Only time will tell for me whether my truck is as dependable as most of the ones I read about on here, but I know that once I do get home and am cruisin' around town in my 7.3, Im gonna be smilin' too!
