Robert6401, first off I want to say thanks and watch yoursef over there, we want all you good people back! I havent had any more problems with my 6.0 PSD than I had with my 7.3 PSD plus it pulls our race trailer much better and quieter. Everyone you see on the 6.0 forum is there with a problem, well almost everyone. Thats a very small minority of people. I`ve asked everyone that has a 6.0 around here if they have lots of problems and ALL have said no and ALL have said they love the 6.0
Thats great, I'm sure you will continue to be very happy with your 6.0. Like I said, I based my decision solely on what I had read. I have driven a 7.3 before, just not mine (yet). I have never driven a 6.0, so I'm not going to pretend to know how they differ. I just thought that Ztunamann might like to hear how someone who was recently in a situation similar to his responded, and why. Also, thanks for the kind words regarding us over here in Iraq, we're fighting the good fight, and making progress every day.
Robert6401,
You have my thanks too, and my prayers you and all the guys and gals over there with you. Keep your eyes open, come home safe, Drive that Ford like you stole it.
Good Luck and as Red Skelton used to say,
May God Bless
Robert - this is one time I LIKE to dogpile on a subject !
Kudos to you Sir and let EVERYONE of your comrades in arms know they have a welcome home awaiting them in greater downtown Texas if they ever come in this next of the woods !
My nephews recently back for Fallujah and says it is not NEARLY like the media presents it....

Now to the question at hand....
rarely in the 7.3 forums since I had to do my buyback of my 02 7.3L X, but wanted to say my 03 6-oh 4x4 X is the BEST vehicle I've ever had....
will out tow, out run, out comfort anything I've ever had and a lot of those I run over, er, ah, I mean across
ANY used vehicle is a gamble and wouldn't blame you one bit from shying away from something with a reputation...
but understand not ALL reputations are accurate or earned
My dad has a 03 F350 6.0 and he loves it, he has not had any problems. It will outrun and outpull my 01 7.3 Ex. He has 38k miles without a problems. My uncle has a 03 6.0 F350 for a work truck. It has a huge tool box bed with ladder racks, welder and genorator, and its usually loaded to the overloads, plus he tows a trailer with a huge scissor lift on it and its got 120,000 on it. All its had was the usual maintence. He likes it alot. Only reason I got a 7.3 was that I couldnt afford a newer Excursion with the 6.0.
Thank you everyone for your support. I am very glad to hear about all of the success stories with the 6.0s. Like I said, I've never driven one, but from what I have read and heard they are a joy. I feel like I made the right decision in going with the latest model 7.3, maybe its just a security blanket for me, but I've been burned before and I was doing everything I could to avoid letting it happen again. I guess that in the end I just wasn't confident enough that I wouldn't fall into the "minority" to go with the 6.0. Please understand that my intent was to never make disparraging remarks towards a 6.0 (other than a little friendly ribbing ), I was simply giving my course of action and the reasons for it.
I had the choice between the new, unproven, smaller 6.0 and the well proven, larger 7.3 when I got my '03. Two reasons for my choice. #1- We all know that first year or new, untested products USUALLY have problems, just like the early '99 7.3's. I can't take that chance, as my truck earns me my living. #2- In my opinion, when you try to get more (power?) from less (size/displacement) longevity and dependability suffer. If you had to choose between the truck with the 400HP 351W or the truck with the 400HP 460, which would you choose? More power from less displacement means greater strain on the mechanical components. Now, maybe the strain is slight, and maybe the 7.3's are severely UNDERWORKED to make the power, but I don't know, so I made my educated guess and went with a more sure thing. I think if I wanted to cover my truck with chrome and accessories, polish it all the time, and haul groceries, the 6.0 may have been the choice, but for work, I had to go with the trusted AND PROVEN 7.3. I think the jury is still out on the 6.0. Hopefully they will be proven by the time I am ready for my next truck.
So I guess to find a good used "reliable" 6.0L in a 250/350 CC, SB I would need to find a 2003 or newer truck? Sorry about being a little ignorant on the later models, I'm trying to catch up so I make a smart purchase. Unlike enduringexplorer I won't be making a living from the truck, but I do plan on keeping whatever I buy for a very long time to squeeze every little dollar's value from it. Plus I can't be towing a $100k + powerboat down the road and have it sitting alongside the highway broke down if you know what I mean...;-)
Here's another vote for the 7.3. There's a lot more room under the hood to get at things when service time comes.
And Robert6401 thank you for your service to the us all. Keep your weapon loaded and your head down.
