The air silencer is usually in the fender(attached) but in someway connected to the airbox....and it does what it is called....silences the incoming air. Some of them even help out by straightening the air as it enters the airbox. Removing it does allows more air into the airfilter.
I removed the factory one on mine & fabricated a larger one out of tin. Probably went from about 2.5" to 4" opening. I think there may be a little more noise, but if it helps my MPG I'll be happy. I really haven't driven the Expy enough since replacing that to know if it will really do much for me.
