Hi my 91 pornostar driver's power window rolls down part way then jams. I have to push it down at the rear to help it go down all the way. Any ideas on how to bring it up to snuff?
Hey Savagefan,
Your window motor is shot. You will need a new motor. You can get a new from Autozone for about $65 or you can go to the junk yard and find one for a lot cheaper. Either way, replacing the motor is not difficult but can be time consuming because you might have to drill through the metal where there are three dimple marks. You may find that the previous owner has already done that before if you bought your van used. If not, drill a 3/4 in hole to get to the retaining bolts. Before you take out the old motor, be sure to tape the glass to the window frame using duct tape and be sure to remember the position of the motor before taking it out.
Installing the new motor requires a little bit of patience and a trouble light to line up the holes. It helps to have another helper . The rest is straigt forward.
Good luck.
Joseph
Often the felt guides on the side of the windows dry up and cause the windows to cockeye when you try to roll them up or down. Get some silicone spray and spray those areas really well.
Yes I agree I was about to replace the window motor on one of my cars when it got stuck on the way up bought a $3 can of silicone spray (Autozone) and the window works like new those motors aren't very strong so give it a try and see what happens.
It's a good idea to lubricate those things once in a while, especially after a heavy rain. That will keep the motors from having to work too hard. My car is 13 years old and it's still on the original power window motors, which really got a lot of abuse by the kids who like to play with them.
Yes those motors are built with just enough torque to lift the window for 2 reasons I can think of 1 the most important to the manufacturer its cheaper to build them.
And 2 for safety if someones fingers specifically a childs are in the window when the driver is closing one of them the motor must stop and jam if they were too strong someone could get hurt.
You'll be suprised how a little hardering of the channel can slow them down or even stop them by provided additional resistance .
You can buy the parts to rebuild the motor from a Ford Dealer. I would also replce the plastic gears too. Make sure you get the teflon grease pack that should come with it.
The plastic gears will fail "Fast" if the grease is left out.
I don't know if our van is just wierd, but when we got it 3 yrs. ago, the prev. owner told us the driver window would stick, just like you described. Go part way down real slow, but then finally catch & go down OK. We never got around to working on it, but several times I sprayed it with silicone.
Eventually, it started working A-OK again! Now, the passenger side is doing the same thing... So, will have to get the spray out again!
Both my windows on my 92 have a hard time going up and down; where exactly do I have to spray the silicone? Last time I had the door apart I remember an arm that moved side to side and I'm guessing there's a hinge that needs to be lubricated?
I was more under the impression that this problem is due to a worn out window regulator. A weak motor may contribute, but the regulator is supposed to hold the window so that it doesn't get caught at an angle. If it rotate even slightly, the window binds.
