If you cant take the starter off the way it is then you may have to disconnect the drive shaft off..make sure you mark the driveshaft and transfer case flanges with yellow paint or chalk before you unbolt it . alignment is a must or you will throw everything off..ps make sure you disconnect the battery cables to play it safe as well. i hope this helps

I put a starter on my '95(4.0 mtr) last year. Didn't have to do anything with the drive shaft. I believe you just need to **** it at an angle to clear everything. Here's what the book says: http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker...3d800b8d4a.jsp

I haven't changed a starter (yet) but how 'bout this thought...

Jack up the vehicle on the frame, causing the front end to sag, dragging the driveline down a little, which should give you clearance.

Just a thought....

found the trick to the starter removal. you have to remove the selenoid cable first, then cocked it a little and it fell right out. no jacking, no drive shaft removal, hope this helps some one else out. it definately had me scratching my head.
