What I got:
2003 6.0 F350 running Predator in tow mode with EGR unplugged.
Truck runs fine, no codes and no apparent problems, but I constantly here a whining sound even at idle. I'm not sure if it is new or if I haven't noticed it before. While I have had no problems or complaints for at least a year this vehicle had all of the issues many of the early 03's had; so I'm always a little skidish. Just checking to see if this is a normal sound (thought it might be the turbo as sound is most noticable at exhaust) or if I should worry.
The Turbo's are a bit louder on the 03' than the newer trucks. And get a bit louder as they get older. And, I could understand that since fuel is managed differently, that there might be some other audible charicteristics. But that whine could be anything. Even the alternator. Try a stethescope on rotating components in the engine compartment to narrow down the source. (be safe) If the sound is coming from the exhaust then I'd suspect turbo or fuel differences creating the sound. If you remove the Predator, (return settings to stock), does the sound change?
Sounds are tough to trouble shoot if we can't hear them. So be as descriptive as possible.
A whining noise could be many things. Dried belt, tension pully bearings going out, turbo, power steering pump low, and many other things. Start one by one and narrow them down.
Thanks for the input. I think that the noise I'm hearing is part of the start-up procedure. It's almost as if I'm hearing a motor spin up and then continue to run. The truck has just over 45K and I'm pretty confident that it is not coming from belts etc. (I have my head and ear in there wherever it would fit). I'm probably just nervous given the vehicles history since everything appears to be running fine. I'm getting approx 12 mpg's but am using a fuel additive called FT-10. The noise is not very loud but since I've heard it I have no problem fixating on it. Were taking a long trip next week from VA to Fla pulling a 10K fifth wheel and I'm hoping for the best.
When you first start the truck (in first 10 - 15 sec does it do it? May have someithing to do with the fast idle.Mine does it a little also at idel only. Good luck
