Upgrade
I currently own a '86 Ranger and I would like to upgrade vehicles to a newer F-150. I would like to be able to do some small towing with it. I have got a 17 foot boot and a 1937 John Deere B that I would like to haul. Probably the most weight on the truck would be about 4000 lbs. What is the smallest size engine that came in the F-150 that will be able to tow all this?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

The smallest engine was the 300. Probably the best all-around truck motor made, too. Pulls better than the 302, about as good as a 351, and gets better mileage than both. (Your mileage may vary 
)

Have an 89 F150 5spd with a rebuilt engine 4.9 (7K miles) and towed a 17' Four Winns all over the place last year with 0 problems. We have a few hills here in CT as well. Not sure of total wt but it is an inboard/outboard, so I'd guess around 3,000 lbs.
