Intermentant Wiper Switch Going South

I have posted this also on the "Electrical" board, but maybe someone could help me out.

Is it possible to clean the contacts inside the Intermentent Wiper Switch on my 92 F250? If I jiggle the switch, it works but it does not like me enough to continue working. Or do I have to buy the whole arm assembly from Ford? It only does this on the intermentant setting. I just need to know how to take it apart without busting it and have the wife on my case when she takes my truck out.

Thanks

I am not sure if it is servicable or not. I would suggest pricing the switch and then purchasing it. Then if it were me, I would experiment with the original switch and see if anything can be done to it. If you break it, throw it away and install the new one. If you feel that you have repaired, then take back the new switch and get your money back. Good luck. Jake.

I had the same problem with my '92 F-150. I sprayed some electrical contact cleaner around the area where you turn the wipers on and they have been ok ever since.

Thanks Guys,

I will try the contact cleaner and then attempt to take it apart.

Good idea, contact cleaner, an obvious answer but we always forget.

I too have an intermittern wiper switch. If the car sits for weeks without using the wipers, they don't work at all for intermittent. I have to push it in like I am going to spray and then turn it back and forth, which seems to help but doesn't completely fix the problem and it is very temporary.

I bet the cleaner will work and if nothing else, it is cheap relatively speaking.

BTW I bought a Ford wiper switch for another car about 9 years ago and it was I think $80, so cheap $8(radioshack) contact cleaner is worth a try. Besides you could always use on other things.

I don't think all dealers will give a refund on electrical parts like the wiper switch, so make sure before you plunk down the money.

A lot of those intermittent switches must have the same problems. Mine will work great, then stop working. If I move it one speed slower or faster it works great again. I was thinking I'd use silicone spray, does the contact cleaner work better or is it just more expensive silicone spray?

Most contact cleaners I have used have a solvent in them and I think an antioxidant(oil?), I don't know if they have silicone too. From the feel of the switch on all the Fords I have played with, it feels like the intermittent switch is a wirewound type of potentiometer(Variable resistor to you gringos). I am assuming that if it is wire, it will corrode over time and here where I live in the Great NorthWet, it seems they corrdode faster than when I lived in sunny, dry Calif.

I believe that contact cleaner should clean off the corrosion and at least for a reasonable time prevent it from coming back.

I am really glad someone mentioned the cleaner, I should have thought of this since I have been fighting this problem for a few years now and just never got around to coughing up the $80 for a new switch. I am going to try the cleaner and I think it will work.

I didn't remove anything on the switch. Just spray it in around the crack where you turn the switch on and move it from different settings as you spray. Mine hasn't missed a beat since I did this about a year ago.

Do a search of this message board. About last summer I found a thread of discussions which gave specific explanations on how to clean the contacts on the intermittent wiper switch on the stem. I followed the procedure and mine has worked great for 9 months.
