I'm not very savvy on trailer brakes..so I need a little "edjumacation" . Question is... the factory wiring that comes on Ex's and SD's has the big round plug which has the extra terminals for trailer brakes..correct?
Now I do know that with electric brakes you normally need a brake controller mounted in the cab to adjust the amount of braking on the trailer... SOooo "if" the plug is pre-wired for brakes...how's this set-up worky...?
You need to buy a brake controller of your choice, and a pigtail connector. The pigtail plugs into another connector under the dashboard, immediately to the right of the driver's footwell (you'll have to search for it), and the loose wires get soldered & heat-shrink tubing'd to your controller.
I highly recommend the Prodigy brake controller ... best unit I've ever used. It's a little more expensive than others, but well worth it.
my x came with the pigtail conector. It was in the glovebox and also had instructions. As I remember, Fords color codes were differant than the brake controler I used (Napa) so I had to use the instructions that came with the truck.
I've installed the Prodigy in my 2000 V10, and it is a great controller. The best prices are on the Internet, and for an additional 11.00 or so you can get the correct harness for the EX that plugs into the Prodigy and into the Ex's harness. Simple hookup. I put my controller in the cubby and used silicone adhesive to mount the slip in bracket.

i have found all the wires and plug-ins. now what
what do i do about the 4 wires that are capped off underthe hood. i would have thought that pre wired would have been from the 7pin all the way to the plug under the dash. i'm pretty easy on doing stuff as long as i understand it clearly.
at the moment it is as clear as mudd
The 4 unconnected wires under the hood are the opposite ends of the 4 under the dash that are for customer access....NOT the brake controller.
You are looking for a plug that is under the radio....this will plug directly into a trailer brake controller plug that came with the truck..or you can get from the dealer.
I removed the panel with the cubby bin, as well as the access panel by the driver's knees. (To remove the cubby, you must also at least loosen the upper part of the dash to get to the screws. More on that if anyone needs help.) Anyhow, the brake controller wiring is behind a metal hole in the dash...it's kind-of between the radio and pedals...but low down. You can find it with a flashlight without much effort.
I used the customer access wires for my airhorns and foglights.
