Ok. I own an 02' Escape XLT 2WD and understand (from reading through this awesome knowledgebase) that the CD4E is the "weak link" in the 2001-2004 Ford Escape. I have read countless postings here and elsewhere that state the best way to help the CD4E live longer is to:
1. Do frequent trany fluid flushes (Mercon only)
2. Add a larger aftermarket tranny oil cooler
3. Add an inline external tranny filter (ex. Permacool)
My question is this. Because it is such a pain to get to the stock tranny filter which I change every time I perform a flush, couldn't I simply gut the next stock filter out (remove the filter inside the plastic housing) and install an aftermarket inline filter such as Permacool, which can be changed with ease? May be this is crazy, but it seems like a practical solution to a somewhat difficult task.
