I own an 02' Escape XLT 2WD and understand (from reading through this awesome knowledgebase) that the CD4E is the "weak link" in the 2001-2004 Ford Escape & Mazda Tribute. I have read countless postings here and elsewhere that state the best way to help the CD4E live longer is to:
1. Do frequent trany fluid flushes (Mercon only)
2. Add a larger aftermarket tranny oil cooler
3. Add an inline external tranny filter (ex. Permacool)
My question is this. Because it is such a pain to get to the stock tranny filter which I change every time I perform a flush, couldn't I simply gut the next stock filter out (remove the filter screen inside the plastic housing) and install an aftermarket inline filter such as Permacool, which can be changed with ease? May be this is crazy, but it seems like a practical solution to a somewhat difficult task.
I'd leave the internal filter alone and just change the outer filter. I've cut open filters that had more than 200k miles that didn't need to be changed.
If you're getting enough junk in the filter to plug it your trans is already toast. Changing the filter won't help.
Thank you for the info. It makes sense to leave the stock filter screen alone. Do you think an inline tranny filter will cause resistance to flow? Significant enough to be a problem that is?
