my girlfriends father thinks it might be under the carb. so i'll take it off i guess and check the gasket and make sure it sits right on the intake.

may be the intake gasket set if the carb gasket thing doesn't take care of it.

I know it seems like a pain, but everytime I pull the carb after I've ran the motor, I replace the gasket. It's cheap insurance.

Retro,

Did you ever solve your vacuum problem? I'm having a similar problem right now...pretty sure I have a vacuum leak, but can't find the source.

Thanks.

i know you replaced the fuel pump and carb but if it dying under load still sounds like a fuel problem either the carb isnt adjusted properly or you have a bad new fuel pump if you have access to a fuel pressure gauge i would test the pressure . what type carb did you get

I don't think it's the converter

This vintage of Ford didn't use a locking torque converter...

exactly, but what if it IS locking? old parts gather years of debris and gunk that jam stuff up when it isn't supposed to. I also don't know much about torque converters, or tranny's, so take my post for what it's worth.
