Do you have vacuum at the manifold fitting for the booster? You said everywhere else, but it wasn't clear to me if you also meant the manifold fitting.
well there isnt a line off the manifold all there is, is a line off the tranny and then it splits off into two lines one goes to the booster and the other from the vacuum advance.
OK, these shouldn't all be together.
The one for the distributor should go to one of the carb's vacuum ports. BTW- what carb are you running?
The brake booster should go to either a vacuum fitting on the manifold, or a large vacuum port at the rear of the carb.
A friend put a holley street advenger that was on his 68' mustang just a bolt and go kind of deal real easy. but before the vacuum set up was the same way and it ran fine. although would that set up creat a lack of power or any other kind of problem? or could this whole problem have been brought on over time because of this?
The vehicle will run without these being hooked up. In order for the booster, timing and tranny to properly function, they need to be hooked up to a vacuum source. Usually a fitting on the manifold, or a fitting on the carb.
Here's how my holley is hooked up, standing in front of the truck:
There is a small vacuum fitting at the base of the carb at the front left (under the fuel bowl), this is where my tranny vacuum line is hooked up.
There is a small vacuum fitting coming out of the left side of the metering block, this is where my distributor's vacuum adv is hooked up.
I have a manifold fitting for my brake booster.
I have the PCV hooked up to the large fitting coming out of the rear left of the carb.
It sounds like your tourque converter is staying locked, you should have it tested. I had a simular problem on an 85 Olds Calais. It was a vacumn actuated overdrive problem. It wouldn't let the tourque converter unlock so when I put it into gear it would die.
how would I test the torque converter?
And thats a good idea cammer i'll take a look at that the next chance I get.
A buddy of mine also wants to check the coil.
so once again I have a few things to keep me busy
oh and hey 71f250 you might want to take care of or figure out whats going on or you might end up like me. How long has this problem been going on because mine creeped up over a month and got bad enough to take a look at within 2 weeks.
OK, you re-ran the vacuum lines. Now, do you have vacuum at the ends of the lines? ie, at the booster, at the distributor, and at the transmission modulator.
Also, have you tried to put your hand over the carb to choke the air supply off? If the rpm's speed up a little, then there is a vacuum leak. If it dies, it's something else...Like the idle might be set too low.
