I have a 97 Expy with the 6-CD in the center. Was on vacation and about 1 hour from home the CD's quit playing. Kept getting message of NO CD's. I have put in new CD's and r&r the cartridge many times. It appears to take the first CD out of the cartridge, but does not reconize that it has loaded it. I keep getting the "NO CD" message. Any help is appreciated.
I'm not sure what is wrong with your stock changer but I replaced one several years ago with a Kenwood. Kenwood is compatible with the factory head unit.
May be cheaper to install a new one rather than repair the old.
I have the same problem with the changer in my '01 EB. I have since removed it after taking it out and cleaning it throughly, to no avail. It's actually on my to-do list for this week to find a new or aftermarket one that will plug directly into the stock wiring harness that came out of this one.
Ford wants somewhere in the $300-400 range for a new one, and there is a core-return charge in that price somewhere. It seems a little steep to me.
I have a 99 Expedition. My CD changer had the same symptions this past winter, though not to cold in Texas. I cleaned a slide with rubbing alcohol and it has worked fine since.
It seems these ford cd changer have a common problem with a little motor that makes the cd spin. Mine had the same symptoms and I have to open it up to see what the deal was. It seems the motor that makes cd's turn was damaged. And as of now I dont know where to buy the replacement part. I know for sure is not at radio shack.
I had the same problem with our 98 Exp right after we bought it. It was still under warranty so we brought it in and they fixed it. Pretty frustrating! We also just left home for a long driving vacation when it happened.
Just curious as to why anyone would buy a CD changer in 2005. I mean, each CD holds on average 18-20 songs. So figure a 6 CD changer holds like 120 songs at most. Why not get an .mp3 CD player? Each CD will hold 160-180 songs, and no worry about changing CD's nearly as often. Now, if it were .mp3 changer CD's you guys were talking about...

Did you have to remove the CD changer and tear it apart? Was it easy to find the ring and pinion and if possible, could you let me know a little more detail.

I've got a Kenwood CD changer with nothing wrong with it that I don't use. It has the 6-CD magazines. I have 5 I think. I'm not even sure this is the one that fits but if anyone is interested, I'll get the part numbers etc...

6 disc cd player was very easy to remove from console ,but when taking the cd player apart just pay close attention ,it was not really hard .on the sides of the player there are to black plastic tabs one has a R and one has a L they have springs, this is for tension ,it lets the cd player bounce when driving,,take those out ,and with pliers you can slide the pins down to one end to remove .I dont remember how many screws there where but you should be able to flip it from top tp bottom and find them .Look in side very close it is the only ring and pinion i seen in there . It sounds more difficult than it really is , the way I looked at mine it was already broke . Ford wanted 250. to take it out and I figured I could replace it for that .Any more questions when taking it apart feel free to respond.
