I am new to the early ford trucks. I bought a f100 about a month ago and was able to drive it last night for the first time. I go to school 3 hours from where it is. I was a little surpized and very dissapointed to discover the transver case doesnt have low range. Is this normal? I thought most all 4x4 had low range. How hard is it to swap in one with low range. I will mainly be using this truck for play and hunting....so.. just play i guess .... Thanks for any help.
My 72 is exactly the same. I don't think a two speed case was even offered that year in the 100. I know they used that same case up to 76 or 77, it's a Dana 21 case, gear to gear, cast iron and very strong. These trucks have low axle gears, and the four speed's granny gear is really deep, so they really don't have too much of a problem with moderate four wheeling.
I believe a 78-79 205 case will bolt up, but don't quote me on that. If you're into spending big cash, you can go with an Atlas II case, they make them for anything.
78-79 np205 can be bolted up, but i'm pretty sure you'll have to change output shaft in the trans. the single speed t-case ( dana 21) was great in my 72' until spinning 35's got a real good sudden bite. End result was busted bell housing, cracked trans & t-cases, and got the rear end. just got to love FE power.
Is it standard or auto? Either way, go to your local junkyard and look for a 67-72 or 73-79 with the 2 speed t-case setup in the chassy the same way as yours. You will need the t-case, shifter and linlages from the donor truck. If you need to change the tailshaft you will need the drivelines also provided both trucks have the same wheel base.
if i had a different front end for mine, i could have possibly found a place for you to get rid of your transfer case, but it doesnt do me any good w/o the rest of the stuff
Hmm, its got the 4 speed with granny first. So there is no transfer case out there that i can just swap in with out changing the output shaft on my tranny. I understand that the driveshafts will probobly have to be changed.

If your t-case is not attached to the 4 speed then it is an easy swap. Just find a 2 speed t-case from a F250/350 that is mated with a 4 speed (it will have a short drive shaft between the tranny and t-case) and it will bolt right in with the only mod needed is the speedo will need to be calibrated.
My '72 with granny 4 speed has always been low enough for me. (Everything short of rock crawling). Redhawk: email me for a whomper load I use in my .44 Redhawk. (They dont recommend using it in the Blackhawk).
