1997 Aerostar

I think I am going to buy a new Aerostar, the guy is willing to sell it to me for 100 bucks, my question is, how much does a front window cost, how much does it cost to replace the right rear fender area, what can I expect from this car and he said the steering felt loose, any ideas what this would be?

Front window installed around $170.00, Rear fender or bumper? Steering could be Bushings, Ball Joints, Bearings, Tie Rods.

duhlry,

Hmmmm... I'll take a few "potshots" for what they're worth... I paid $189 for a windshield (installed), front window shouldn't be more. Right rear fender area? Dude, that's a lot of metal! I can't take a guess on that, none of my A*s have ever needed that replaced, but I can tell ya that I've been rear-ended in an Aero, it didn't look too bad but was $4K. Steering loose? Probably/possibly the rack/pinion worn out. Cheap part, about $70 tops, lotsa labor unless you DIY. Hope that helps at least a little...

Cool, thank you very much .... I have about a grand set aside to make this car runnable .... hopefully that will be enough. Also, do you know if there is a fuse that powers the lights that would allow them to work on Hi Beam but not on low???

If you did all the work and replaced everything around $250.00 for Bearings, Upper, Lower Ball joints, outer Tie Rods, and upper bushings. The Lower bushings seem to never wear out.

That is from NAPA. You can use there online site to get a idea. The prices are lower in the store when I go.

duhlry,

Racerguy posted this link to A* parts as part of another thread. Bottom line, they have cheap replacement panels for the quarter panels...

Take a look and see what you think.

As for your loose steering at the cheapest end its the outer tie rods my Aeros were bent and it only had 45k miles on it and after I replaced them the steering got much tighter. Just be sure if you do the tie-rod work yourself to have the wheels aligned that was the reason I noticed they were messed up my front tires wore unevenly .

To test for tie rod wear jack the car up at the front and grab the tire on the left and right hand side and try to move them and make sure there is not alot of play.

how many miles are on this 97 van? maybe it just needs balanced tires and a good alignment...i would not rush to fix things till you have driven it a while, and checked them out .i got my 91 from my brother in-law about 5 + years ago when he thought it was dying. that was 100 thou miles ago. it swayed when you turned quickly. needed new front bushings and shocks all around, which i eventually did. the aerostar seems pretty rugged. it will run with a lot out of wack. meanwhile you can save up some$. also i got my front windshield replaced this year when a rock hit it. cost me 50$, cost the insurance 200$. good luck rick

91 aerostar xl, ext aka "the green bean"
214,600 thousand miles and going.........
