empty oil filter...

hello! i'm putting the top end together on my 360. i took off the heads, etc. and have the new ones on, and i just decided to drain the old oil and when i took off the oil filter it was empty. ?? its been sitting awhile but it doesnt look like there was any oil in it before. its a little wet inside but none poured out. it showed normal oil pressure whenever it was running and the filter has been on for 2000 miles or so. i'm about to call napa and raise cain but i thought i better check if theres some reason this would happen that i don't know of. its one of those new napa "spin flow" . would it be a defective filter or maybe a clog somewhere? i'm thinking of just putting on a new one before i start it but...

It is normal for the oil to seep out of an oil filter after a while. It just winds up back in the pan. It happens more on horizontally mounted oil filters like most of these engines have. It's not a problem.

You will want to put a new filter on it and change the oil after any engine work though.

Was it a fram? They are known for doing this. Buy a good quaitly filter next time. The filter should be full of oil even after sitting for awhile.

I agree with FERacing66. I use Wix 51515 with nothing but great results.

Concave vs. convex

I've had some filters with a convex plate (at the threaded nipple) and it actually blocks off the oil flow. My dad's '95 Dodge 5.2 had a similar problem. They were both Fram filters. I've used the Wix since and always look for a concave filter plate.

FWIW, the Napa Gold filter is a Wix, just at lower price.

If Fram are such POS why does Consumers Union use them as the quality standard when comparing oil filters? And rarely does anybodies filter do better. You people amaze me sometimes.

I have read in the Summit magazine that some of the Fram filters filter particles as small as 10 to 15 micron (might be 12 to 15) and that is fine and all but most particles that cause wear are in the 20 micron and bigger range. I have heard that with that restrictive of a filter that sometime the bypass valve or something can open up and the particles are just going back into the engine. I have also had some people tell me they have had oil pressure woes with Fram filters. I would like to cut one open someday and compare it to some other brands. I know that I don't like Pennzoil brand air filters (very cheaply constructed and that doesn't excite me much when I see someone using their oil filters). I have just heard enough bad stuff about Fram that I stay away from their oil filters at least. I have never heard anything bad about Napa and Carquest filters (made by Wix), Wix, Motorcraft. I have never used a Purolator, K/N, Wal Mart brand (Supertech) and they may be good or bad, I don't really know.

In my youth' back in the 60's and 70's the AC rep that came around the dyno shop I worked at as a second job to the militry to support my race car, had a oil filter test board in his truck. It used machinist oil with a 15 micron red dye in it. There were mounts for 4 filters and valving so he could select which filter to run it through and a tank so you could see how the filter did. I noticed in all his testing that he never ran Frams. Was socializing one night and ask him about it. He said that they were as good as his AC's and cheaper.

I am not disbelieving you, and you would think that at this point in our highly techinical world that even the old oil filter would be better than it was 15 years ago. Maybe it is the same, maybe it is better, maybe it is worse, I don't really know. I do know that Fram has quite a few different lines of oil filters and I guess it wouldn't hurt to do some researching on their website.

Bear years ago Fram was a better filter. I used them long ago but started having problems in the mid 80's. Oil pressure was a problem with them for some reason. Thought it was just a bad filter but number two did the same thing. Replaced it with a Motorcraft and problem solved. I prefer WIX or Motorcraft now and use nothing else otherwise. JMO, G.

I was kind of wondering if they used to produce better stuff and at some time became greedy and didn't care so then there quality went down. I have just heard enough bad stuff in the short 7 years of Ford truck and FE hobby that I don't want to chance my engines.
