3.0 4x4 mpg and performance

I've been entertaining the idea of ordering an 06 reg. cab edge 3.0 4x4 5spd. I believe the sticker on a such a truck says 17/21, an uncle of mine had a 94 or 95 and said he usually saw 20mpg. My current ride is a 98 F-150 4.6 4x4.....would like to keep her, but 14mpg gets old quick these days. Just wondering what you folks get with a 4x4 3 liter. I'll probably be seeing a 50 mile round trip 5 days a week, with a fair amount of in town driving. I know the 3.0 isn't exactly known for amazing power, but after having a 97 ranger 2.3 and my current truck I'm not exactly looking for something that'll throw me back in the seat. Just need something to get me where I want, pull a lil trailer with a lawn tractor, and go down muddy field roads......while hopefully getting pretty decent gas mileage.

Welcome to FTE
Try to test drive both the 3.0 and the 4.0 L engines in the 4x4 application. I think that you'll probably be dissapointed with the 3 liter considering the added weight of the 4x4 system, and that you want to do some towing. Also, there isn't a world of difference in gas mileage between the two engines. You're not going to get "great" mileage with the 3.0. I get around 16 city, 22 hwy with a 3.0 S/C 4x2. Best of luck in your search and purchase.

The 3.0 is a very reliable engine but trust me you won't be happy with its performance in a 4x4 application, especially if you live in a hilly area. I have a 3.0, 4x4 w/stock tires and 4:10 gears and the motor is just too small. Get a 4.0.
