There have been many threads on 5.4L MPG, but I haven't seen any on the 4.6L. What kind of mileage are you getting?
My first fillup was 16.6 MPG, but I don't know how full the dealer had the tank. My second fillup was exactly 17.0 MPG. That was about 40% city and 60% highway.
All my previous new vehicles took around 3,000 miles to reach peak MPG. It usually ended up about 20-25% better than the first few tanks. This makes me hope I'll be able to average somewhere around 20 MPG.
If I get that, then I'll be glad I bought the 4.6L. If I stay stuck around 17 MPG, I may have been better off with the 5.4L. But something tells me I'll wind up close to, or even a little over that 20 MPG mark.
My brother has a Mustang with the 4.6. It's much lighter and aerodynamic and he is only getting 19 mpg. So if you are getting 17 out of a full-size V8 powered truck, you better keep that thing forever!
I bought my 04 reg cab XLT with the 4.6l back in mid November when visiting my son in Texas. With 106 miles on the odometer wee hit the interstate for our trip home (Augusta, Ga) and averaged 19.8 mpg on the interstate running 75-80 mph most of the way. Truck performed great. Around town and on daily drives to and from work I have been averaging 12.5 to 13 mpg. Truck now has 2200 miles and my next mod will be to put dual exhaust w.Flowmasters and I am thinking about a power chip up grade also. When I did similar mods to my 97 Ram 1500 5,2 my highway milage jumped from 18.5 to 21-22mpg and that was while pulling my 18: bassboat. I haven't seen to many sites with performance mods for the 04 4.6 F-150s yet but hope they will start popping up soon. Hope you get one and enjoy it.
FWIW, I average 22 with my 4.6, driving back and forth to work (30 mi. one-way, all country roads averaging 40-50 mph). It's in a '96 Town Car, about 70,000 mi.

Out of a Mopar V8? Ok, I've heard it all now. The Chrysler engines used in Dodge trucks were some of the worst gas guzzlers ever produced. That is exactly why they scrapped it for the 4.7 OHC. How exactly are you guys calculating this stuff? Do you have factory tire sizes on your trucks? Are you sure your filling up each time?
Man I didn't mean to hit a nerve. I ran 265 70R16 Liberator radials @ 35 psi. The 5.2 ltr was stock on the inside but I installed shorty headers to use the factory "Y" pipe and O2 sensor with a Flowmaster series 50 single inlet dual outlet running 2.5" duals out the rear. Peaked the computor settings for a better performance with good gas milage as a bonus. I keep fuel records for 2 years for tax purposes and made 5 round trips to central Texas from the Augusta, Ga area (running 75-80 mph) pulling an 18' bassboat on three of those trips. The mileage averaged 21,5 mpg round trip. I intended to buy a new 04 Ram Hemi reg cab but the Dodge boys wouldn't deal with me and the salesman made a "smart" remark: "Go see the Ford dealer." I told him I would and he replied "You'll be back." Hope he isn't trying to hold his breath. Happy Holidays to all!
21.5 mpg while towing a couple thousand pounds at 75 mph? Now I have heard it all... I think you mean 21.5 kilometers per gallon, lol. Considering that when I tow my snowmobiles (2200 lbs gross including trailer) I am lucky to get 13 mpg at 70 mph, I think you are exaggerating your numbers ever so slightly. No
BS please.
04 STX 4WD Supercab. 3.55 gears, 18" Wheels and tires. Just over 3000 miles on the truck, and I have just changed the oil. I drive 48 miles each way to work - 98% highway - and the best MPG I have gotten is 14.2. It had better get better....
horsepower is the result of burning fuel so it only stands to reason that a dodge gets good milage, it can't make any more power than a briggs and stratton.
went to california speedway this past weekend. Didnt realize how EASY it is to speed in my 4.6. Im cruizing along with 4 in the truck tailgating stuff in the bed, a/c on MAX going 70-80mph on average, got 19.05 mpg. not too shabby.
