Is this the blend door problem?

Last month or so my heat has been screwed up in my 01 Sport Trac. The problem is with the heat setting. If I put the control on the highest setting it'lll be hot for maybe 5 seconds and then switch to cold and then back, and continue to do this. One in a while it'll stay just stay warm where I want it. But I think I have also noticed that if I put the heat setting on midway that it'll still swing from warm to cold. Also, when the blower is on low I can hear what sounds to be something kind of fluttering - I wonder if that isn't the door not staying in position.

There seems to be no problem in selecting the air flow for defrost, floor, dash, etc.

Most people with the blend door problem said that it just stay'd hot - mine alternates.

Guess I could just dig into it and see what I find - any suggestions?

Doesn't sound like a blend door problem. When the blend door breaks it stays hot or cold and doesn't usually fluctuate. Mine stayed cold. I suppose it's possible that the door is swinging in the breeze but I doubt it.

Not the blend door!

Well I looked at it yesterday and best I could tell the blend door is fine - at least where the actuator makes contact with it. Man was that a pain to get that actuator out with the 3 screws holding it down. Now I'm wondering what the problem really is?

Any ideas?

Bad heater control valve or a vacuum leak at the valve?

Well - several months of warmer weather have passed and now I'm looking at this again. As I said before the heat control seems to be screwed up - if I put it on warm it be warm then go cold, maybe go warm again, then cold, etc.

This weekend when I was able to get the heat going then I disconnected the blend door actuator - now I have heat all the time. What does this tell me? If the actuator will stay fixed when disconnected than I think this is telling me that something with the heater control is not working. I haven't taken anything apart to look at it,and quite frankly I'm not sure where to start. Any ideas?

My 02 had similar problem

When hot outside using ac going down freeway i could feel heat comming
thru ducts. Same but reverse in winter, Mostly when moving.
Actuator motor clip fell off fresh air door, it's about 6" by 10".
While i don't advise repairing yourself as entire dash must be removed,
if you pull out glove box and get a good flashlight you can have someone turn
the controls to see if this is it.

I hope this not your problem, i spent 6 hours fixing mine.
Good luck!!

Thanks - I think the actuator and where it engages the door is fine, but what controls the actuator is out of wack.

Question

I know this thread is almost a year old, but my wifes sport trac has the exact same problem as jdew1920. The heat will be cycle from cold to warm and back again all by itself. The blend door actuator moves ,the blend door doesn't seem broken, the heater control valve arm moves in and out when it is supposed to (max ac it goes in,off it goes in,heat and defrost settings the arm moves out).I replaced the thermostat. There is flow in the radiator, both heater hoses at the firewall are hot .I was just out in the driveway with the trac up to operating temp and heat coming thru dash vents and then cold air starts , after a short period of time(less than a minute) warm air starts again. The only thing I'm doing is sitting in the seat scratching my head trying to figure out what the heck I forgot to check.Does anyone have any ideas???

PS--great site here and my hats off to all that started and added info to the blend door fix thread.

I ended up replacing the blend door actuator and that fixed the problem. I think it ended up costing about $80 from the dealer.

I've got a troubleshooting guide for the HVAC system I got from a friend of mine at Ford. If you are somewhat technical it may help you diagnose your problem - but it does sound just like mine. If you change your profile to allow emails I can email it to you.

Thanks for the response JDEW1920.I was hoping you would see this thread. My wifes trucks does exactly what you described your's did.I checked everything I could think of and it all seems to work. The actuator does move but maybe there could be some freeplay in the gears?? Anyway thanks for letting me know what fixed yours,I will be buying a new actuator today. I will also be changing my profile to accept e-mails. Thanks again, Brian

Thumbs up

followup:

I replaced the blend door actuator and the heat works exactly as it should.I was curious so I opened up the old one and it all looked ok,no stripped gears ,no burns on the circuit board, just alot of grease on the circuit board.Don't really know what went wrong with it ,but it is in the trash now.
Thanks again jdew1920 for sharing the info.

Glad you got it fixed. My actuator was the same way. There appeared to be nothing wrong with it. I had even taken mine out left it connected to the controls and it seemed to respond as expected so I put it back in, but when actuatlly connected to the door didn't seem to work.
