Differential Compatibility

I am currently restoring a 77 stepside with a 400 (not cc) engine, 3 speed hurst shifter. I was wondering if anybody could tell me what would be the best differential from a scrapyard which would be compatible with this. Also, which gear ratio would be best suited.

You didn't type in enough info for people to answer.

What rear does it have now?
What is the truck going to be used for ?
Size tires?

Without knowing all the details, I suggest the following:

1. Ford 9" rear axle with 3.50 or 3.73 gears (31 spline at a minimum)

The reason for picking this diff, is simple. It really is a strong rear-end and also easy to work on. Try and find one with a limited-slip or locking rear.

Good luck with your rebuild.
