460 flywheel interchange

have a 78 f250 4wd.truck was a standard shift. now all the running gears are gone. the motor is still there but the flyweel is missing. i work at a salvage yard and havent seen many 460s with a 4 speed behind them. is there any other motors that the flywheels will interchange. we have plenty of 360/390, 351m/400's with four speeds behind them.

nope.. ford made three flywheels for the 460. first was the internally balance commonly called the nuetral balance. the second was the cast crank with the externally balanced, and the third was the "fuel injection" balance. none of which will interchange with any other ford flywheel. you need to be sure you do get the correct flywheel. check the front balancer, behind it is a extension. it will either be smooth(forged or steel crank), or it will have a counterweight(cast crank). this will tell you if you need to have a nuetral or externall balanced flywheel. as for a year cut off, dont believe it. my father in law bought a Safarai Sarangetti motorhome new off the floor in 88 with a 460, and yes, it has a STEEL crank. i still dont believe it, but i have pictures to prove it.

A 360/390 flywheel fits a 429/460 and is internally balanced. This is the first time I've heard about a "fuel injection" balance, please explain. I would also like to see these pictures of a "STEEL" crankshaft in a factory built 460.

slong,
If your motor has a smooth spacer behind the balancer then a flywheel from a 360/390 or 429CJ - SCJ car engine will work. There were no 460's with manual tranny's until the 80's model trucks which were externally balanced and had a counter wieght on the spacer behind the balancer that kinda looks like a hatchet. The 460 flywheels have a counterwieght cast into the back of them like a 351M-400. Sorry I didn't give a full answer in my first post.

actually the switch to external balance cranks was in 79, and will have the hatched spacer behind the dampner there is no such thing as a "fuel injected balance" it's the same as the external balance after 79. Also there never was a forged steel 460 crank if you have a big block in a 88 with a steel crank it is a 429 not 460

Oh im sorry, 71 460 out of lincoln going in a 78 f-250 4x4. I bought the mounts from L and L and plan to get the headers too. id like to find a cheaper route than buy the L and L flywheel but I dont want to sacrifice strength and durability. Interestingly you spoke about a starter for a lincoln would work with the 390 flywheel. Are the depths different for different models (same engine) ? Sorry if i did a repost somewhere,I have looked through 250+ pages and no answers...ha ha . I mentioned strength and durability because im pretty sure this flywheel i have is a 10" pressure plate.
