Okay, i have a hole in my brake line at the front of my bed...i want to replace the line from there on back...and i have NO IDEA how to do it, but want to learn..anyone want to explain in great detail how to do it?..thanks
Please don't use compression fittings. They can only handle about 350 to 400 psi in most braking that is all you need but in a panic stop it can be as high as 1500psi. You can only guess what can happen. The only legal way to repair brake tubing is with a double flair.
Dont take chances with your brakes. Pedal going to the floor as you try to stop is not fun. Your better off replacing the whole line but if you insist. You can splice the line by first cuting it off at the spot of the leak. Double flare it and couple it togther. You need to buy a flaring tool. And it is kinda tricky the first couple times you do it. My advice is take it to a brake shop. I wont even flare a line for a customer unless its a temporary repair to get them home. Not going to be responsible for someone getting killed because my flare leak. Play it safe and do it right.
yea..but i want to learn, and no way to learn unless you do it...okay..my question now is..whats the difference in a just a regular flare and a double flare..?..thanks for all the replys
I just did the whole system on my 94 F-150. Ridgid makes a great double flaring tool which I used. I Bought the tool kit from www.Coastaltools.com for 62.50 plus 7.50 shipping, well worth its weight in gold. make easy work of double flares. The first tool I bought from Advance Auto failed 3 times before the 3/16 adapter broke.
Basically, a double flare is a double lap of metal at the flare making it more durable at the junction. You can buy a 25' roll of 3/16" tubing at advance auto for about $15. Or you can buy pre-flared tubing pretty inexpensive as well, but in my opinion, its best to have less junction points.
BTW, if you got a hole from rust, i6ts probably a good idea to replace all the lines.
well..i go to high school and we have vocational school too..and i could get the heating and cooling class to flare the tubing for me...i just need to know what i'd have to tell them..
Heating and cooling may not have this it is just called a double flair. But their are several ways to fix this. not sure what type of car or truck you are working on.
You might be able to buy pre bent line set from a place like www.inlinetube.com
Or you can buy pre flaired strait lines and unions from the auto parts store and just buy combo of sizes to make it work. And bend them into shape remember no sharp bends that kink the line. A tubing bender would help. You should replace all the rusted line but you can find a fatory union on your car ahead of the leak and replace the line from their back. Use some way to hold the lines raddling and moveing or bubing that would cause them to break. Be careful and do a good job it is not only your life but others as well. If you get this far we can explain how to blead the system.
okay..thanks for all the help so far..it will be a little while before i can get the tubing and stuff...but after i do,i will try to put it on,then i will come back and have some more questions...
