Apparently the wiper switch for the 63-66 has been discontinued. Checked sources and they don't have them. Did find one thru Parts Voice but asking $75. Hate to put that much into a $30 switch, may have to if no choice. Looking for 2 speed for my 65 F100. Any help would be appreciated.
The junkyards in the Dallas/Fort Worth area are full of trucks with wiper switches (but I don't know if they work). I pulled a light switch, wiper switch, and an emergency flasher switch from a '66 F100. I got them to keep on hand for spares. $5.00 for all three!
James
I also have acquired number of extra parts for the 65 thru salvage but unfortunately do not have extra switch. Recently moved and not familiar with local salvage yards. Toured them couple months back and not impressed. Expect will hit them again before paying $75 for a switch.
This may be the time to upgrade to a wiper delay system as well.
Use the wipers from a '73 - '79; you may be able to use earlier and later ones, but I know these years work.
Don't cut any wires except the power supply to the wiper system (to the switch connector if I remember right), and the wire(s) to the squirt bottle. The wiper system has its own completely separate wiring harness, so it is easy to remove and install as a complete system.
Take the wiper switch, the wiper delay module, the wiper motor and the harnesses between them all as a complete setup, and transplant them into your truck.
You will need to use your truck's mount bracket for the motor, and be sure to use your bellcrank.
Simply disconnect your current wiring, and tie it up out of the way. Tap the new into a power supply, and your new wiper system will work.
The switch will mount into the dash just like the old one; you can use the original **** as well. The new shaft will need to be cut short to look correct, but no one will know the difference other wise.
I used the wiper delay system from a '76 F-150 in my '66.
Thanx banjo, considered the upgrade but was not sure how to do it. Was going to go with the wiper upgrade at later date. If unable to locate the 63-66 switch in salvage yard, it will be sooner than later. If there is a 73-79 setup available intend to pull it regardless.
I'm more familiar with the 67-72s, and this is a common upgrade for them as well. From my sources (I still need to do this to my '71s and my '61), Ford did not start using the wiper delay until '78, and only the '78-'79 are an easy swap like banjopicker mentioned. XLTs and Broncos are the best sources since it was an option. There is a really good tech write up on another Ford truck web site for the 67-72s. I'd post the link, but it would get deleted by the mods. A google search should find it, or PM me if interested.
Edit: I just noticed a discrepancy in the tech article where later they say a '73-'79 can be used. So Banjopicker could be right on the years. I'm checking it out further and will report back to confirm.
Seems to be getting slim pickins at the salvage yard for these vintage trucks. If can expand selections to include the XLT's and Broncos all the better.
comet-Came across an article in the 'slick 60's truck forum, not sure if same forum you are referring to. If not will PM you.
Dave, I think there are many options available with wiper switches. Delays from trucks, vans, and some cars can be used. I know the stems are longer on some switches and have to be shortened so your **** will be inline with others on the dash.
Appears Ford initially used the same 2 speed motor as the 65 but then came out with another 2 speed in the later part of 66 for conventional trucks. From what i can gather, the same 2 speed motor was then used from 67-79. The 78-79 Bronco also used the same motor. Imagine switches could be interchangeable thru different year/type ford vehicles as long as harness compatible. Not sure difference between 65 and later 66 thru 79 other than the relay feature and possibly washer. If looking for short term fix it would seem you could use later switch with the 65 motor and splice the necessary wires eliminating the relay.
I believe difference you're "not sure of" is a capacity / ability to run in the intermittent
mode Banjo mentioned above Dave. By 66 all FoMoCos were alternator powered among other things, and the constant volt-amp reserve an Alt system maintains (when right) allowed for better/ more electrical accessories.
I know for a fact window motors also are late 65 [read that as 66 & up] thru late '80s perhaps even 90s (I just haven't dealt with much 90's stuff). Using later FoMoCo stuff in earlier FoMoCo products has been around since Henry put his assembly line concept into action. Obviously not all things interchange with each other.
But common items, such as electrical switches, motors, relays, et al can interchange for decades & decades. It's the case w/windshield wiper switches, motors, harnesses, delay circuitry etc. Another thing I have a penchant for upgrading is electric window switches. Long before a fact that children got hurt or killed by electric windows was an item on the evening news, I was changing older window switches to newer styles and/or locations. Same with power door lock motors.
So I am an advocate of upgrading and I am an advocate of trying newerFoMoCo stuff before I try off brand or aftermarket stuff. Mostly I am presently suprised (as usual).
The rear end in my 88 F150 is a 9" out of a 77 F150. I do not like Dana Rear ends! This is a "retro" not really an upgrade but point is it was a bolt in retro and it greatly improved my 88 F150 all across the board[ so in my dense head it was an upgrade].
FBp, i agree with you about upgrades. It will be raining for next few days and was looking for a quick fix. Not much sence in going back over repair when appears the upgrade is not that involved. Will fetch the necessary parts for the upgrade as soon as weather permits. Imagine won't cost too much more than the $75 switch.
Dittos Mr. Pete, I did swap a 76 2spd. wiper motor in my 66 to get the 2 speeds and then was introduced to the delay. That bees a nice feature. Delays are going as high as $75.00 regulary on Ebay, but you should be able to pick one up in your favorite pick & pull for $10-15.00.
Window moters sure look the same for many years and many models.
Went salvage shopping today for the wiper upgrade with no success. Seems can locate the motor but the phantom switch remover got them all, along with the power steering units. Unable to determine if the relay is incorporated in the motor or separate component between the motor and switch. Meantime found 65 switch more reasonably priced. Still intend to shop for the upgrade.
