Dim battery light

I have a '92 ford diesel. The battery light on the dash is lite very dimmly and I have noticed the voltmeter gauge is very slow to return to normal. It will fall with lights on or after starting and after 20 min of driving it will return to normal. I have the model with an external Voltage regulator. Anybody know how I can determine which device is failing.

Thanks in advance

Before you spend any $$$-remove battery cables and check and clean all of them. Then, use a hand held volt meter.Make sure your grounds are good.

Take the voltmeter and with the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery terminals. Normally it's around 14 volts running.
