I'm in the process of installing an instrument cluster with tach and trip odometer from the wreckers. The problem is the trip odometer. How can I get the odometer to show the same reading as the original odometer? I know messing with an odometer is illegal, but I'm trying to do exactly that: keeping the right odometer reading on the truck.
I can move the white wheel with the black numbers, but that takes ages. Same is true for using a drill on the axel.
Is there something else I have overlooked?
Or am I stuck with my old odometer without trip-odometer?
Or am I missing something?
You arent supposed to fiddle with it , you are legally obligated to reflect that the odometer has been replaced , noting what the original odometer was reading & what the used one indicates at the time it was installed . New or used you are legally bound to keep track of it if you did the installation .
odometer replaced on "date"
original odometer mileage...add to replacement odometer mileage.
Place sticker on B-Pillar next to specs. sticker and seal it with clear shipping tape.
Then when or if you sell it you check off the box that states that the mileage is in excess of mechanical limits.
OR you can take to a speedometer shop and they can match the mileage for ya. This is legal in most all states. AND they can certify that the mileage on the odometer matches that of the old one. But you changing the mileage is illegal.

Thanks for the tip!!
Just look in the Yellow pages under Speedometer for your local company.
BTW-They are a very popular way to help get out of speeding tickets. Just swap the speedo gear out of the tranny with one that makes the speedo read low ($8 and some time), Do the test and get the card saying it is broken ($25). Prove that in court to get a fix-it ticket. Then replace it back and prove it works right for the new ticket ($25). Lastly, you can only do this once per vehicle. You change a speeding ticket to a fix-it ticket (priceless). Of course this is totally illegal and I would never want anyone to do this, but I have seen others do it and save money on insurance. Its your ethical decision.
I found a place here, thanks a lot! They charge me $45 to set the odomoter reading to where my old odometer was. Pretty steep for a cluster that was only $50, but faster than hooking up the drill for 4 days...
