I have a 1988 Bronco II, 2.9 liter, automatic with Touch Drive 4WD. It has automatic locking hubs. My problem is when I try to shift into 4WD I can hear the solenoids working and the shift motor trying to operate but it will not engage the transfer case. The funny thing is it works fine in the summer or when it is warm weather. It will not work in cold weather. Another problem I'm having is my gas mileage has dropped dramatically. It went from 17 to 12. If I don't let it get to at least 140 degrees before trying to drive it, it will cut off and is almost impossible to start. I need some pointers please.
Your 4WD problem sounds to me like the shift motor is dirty. Quite common, and can easily be dissassembled and cleaned out.
As for the gas mileage drop, the first thing to do would be to pull codes from the computer. See Ken00's tech info post for instructions (only requires a paper clip).
What's this about it stalling if you try to drive it cold? That could be a dirty throttle body/intake. Could also be a bad O2 sensor or other part of the engine management system. Again, start by pulling codes.
