my qustion is did ford make aluminum 460's ror production ? i have a 78 bronco with a 351m i've heard the 2 are about the same on gas but not power. fuel injection on the 335's are a real pain. ford sells them with no water jackets. any thoughts

do you mean a complete alum 460? no ford never made an alum 460 block although there are some made in the aftermarket but the block costs more than your bronco, and thats not saying anything bad about the bronco. but why would you want one they aren't that much different in weight, and if you add alum heads, and intake they would be as light as the 351m with a lot more power.

not that I have ever heard of, but I won't say not a chance nothing any of them ever did suprises me anymore, but as far as I know the closest to 460 is 454 chev, 455 pontiac, Olds, and buick, and the 472 caddy.
as far as the alum blocks I can't remember who makes them for a 460 but have seen a couple at different times, but the only one I found when doing a search was a Y block, and a small block.

my bad on that one I didn't read it close enough when I went to see if I could link it up and the wording was not very good it said "Alum Y block" and then nothing but they were talking about alum Y block valve covers, I did find that the Z351 motorsport engine is based on an alum windsor block, and a while back there was an all alum 427 SOHC including alum block for sale. but I didn't save the auction so can't pull that one back up unless someone happens to know the auction number for it.

Ford makes one part number #M-6010-A96* , aluminum siamesed block, wet or dry sump, 4 bolt mains, 4.625" max bore, "strokable" to about 600cid with the right heads. It weighs a little under 200lbs (196lbs I think?) but its only 100lbs lighter than a cast iron block. They are "rated" by Ford to give up to 1600HP at 7500 RPM. But I'd imagne that's not on pump gasoline. These are not cheap. If I remember correctly they are in the $3000 range for the naked block. Your Ford dealer can price it out however, expect a 10% discount max from most dealers. More if you're lucky or a good negotiator.

The Chevy 454, Olds 455, Caddy 472 are the exact same engine as the Ford 460, except they all have different bell housing patterns, the spacing of the crank journals are different, the crank flange is different in diameter and pattern, they have different bearings, pistons, rods, and all four engines oil themselves differently.

Other than that, they're the same

actually if that block weighs in at 200lbs that is only 20lbs lighter than my D9TE block at 220, so not much of a savings, adn are you sure on that price cause the A460 iron block is like 2500 list, and the A600 iron block is more than that so I would think an alum block would be about double or atleast it is in the small block stuff. infact if I remember correctly the 351 alum block list for something in the 4k area

No, I'm not sure of the price at all, I had hoped it was clear it was a guess on my part.

I know the Donovan machine version upwards of 10K...

Ford doesn't make their aluminum block anymore. They did make an all aluminum 494 for the CanAm series in the 60's, but one of those blocks would probably cost you over 20 G's today. There is a company out there making the aluminum blocks still. I have their website bookmarked at home I think. They cost $4695 and you pick the deck height. The weight for a std. deck is supposed to be 160lbs. I found one at the Mid America Shelby and Ford Performance Meet 2 years ago for $2600. I would have considered it, but it was 12" deck height and wouldn't fit in my car. Had also had some repair work done to one of the mains and a crack welded up in the water jacket. For that kind of money I'm not taking chances with something like that.
