FE446, back on the stand!

Well, she's back on teh stand again. She seems to like it there. So, I may just clean her up and leave her there to admire :-)

If I get motivated, I'm going to detail the engine and engine compartment. Maybe convert to an aluminum radiator and catch can. (Those Jegs and Summit adds are very effective :-)...

While the engine is out, I may get the Keith Craft treatment for the heads and intake, consider a cam upgrade. Although, KC did not provide a cam reccomendation. They basically said my combination looked good for what I was trying to do. My description: A 3/4 ton that can still act like a truck but suprise a few ricers and pony cars at the track.

I'm also looking into a slightly higher stall torque converter. I'm thinking 2000-2500rpm should still work well with the 4.10 gears and C6 auto.

I am once again truckless...this blows. Maybe I can get the 62 Cheby running again..

So gtex,

What exactly is a 446FE and what are the specs on it? It sounds like it has big hairy kahonies!

It does have big hairy ones, but that doesn't keep him from complaining alot!

I'll let him tell you about it. Like many of us he is caught up in the constant improvement game. No matter what you have, a little more would be better!

I have this philosophy that has cost me a fortune on this project. "If I gotta go in, might as well........" Basically, if something fails, I take that opportunity make more upgrades.

Now, theres only about 3 Ford built parts in my motor. Oil Pan, timing cover, block :-) She was getting upwards of 450-475hp, with changes that are under consideration, it could get closer to 575-600HP (all motor). If I ever get it to run consistently, then there is a possibility of adding NOS to get the trap speed up even higher :-)

Eventually, this philosophy will result in one of 2 common phenomena: 1. Credit card rejection, 2. Wifeus departus...:-)

But, Scouder's right. I spend mroe time in here whining than I do wrenching. Knuckles get beat up less typing on this keyboard :-)

TCI reccomended their Saturday Night Special Torque Converter, much to my surprise. I think the stall speed will be about right at 2200rpm. I just hope it can hold up the the torque and possibly some towing.

And a new crank, and new rods, and new cam, and probably new heads...

Greg, I bought the same torque converter along with the TCI Streetfighter transmission for my pickup. They said that in my application it should stall at 2000 to 2100 RPM's. TCI recommended that I went one step up to the Breakaway unit which would stall anywhere from like 2300 to 2600 I believe. My cam company said that unless I was running at the strip a lot with sticky tires that I would be happier with the Saturday Night Special converter for more street than strip use, so I went with the cam companies' recommendation. All I have got done to it this week is taken the exhaust pipes off so now it just has headers and it sitting up on a lift in our shop. Planned on at least getting the tranny and steering gear out this week but guess what. Wednesday morning I walk from my dorm room over to our shop (tired and hungover somewhat I might add) to find a sign that says, "No Auto Mechs. today". Apparently my instructor had to go to the hospital cause his stomach was hurting him. He had surgery today for gull (gall?) stones I believe. I hope he is doing fine and in my wanting to get my pickup done hope that he is back in action next monday. I heard it may be 2 weeks before he could be back. Yikes, I also gotta get my Auburn Gear Pro Series limited slip differential in among other things.

Greg, as long as you've got it out and are changing the TC, get a good tranny guy to quicken up the shifts and adjust the govenor/modulator to let it shift at 5000-5500 at WOT.

Oh yeah, on the TC, you won't even notice the stall on the street or really even towing. It'll just get higher in the torque curve.

The most important thing with a higher stall is COOLING. If you're changing the rad, don't run the trans thru it and put the biggest, most efficient tranny cooler you can find on the truck. It'll make the tranny last a lot longer. And if you're really worried, add a trans temp guage. You don't have enough guages yet anyway.

Strokster, I figured you had seen this. I've been looking at a tranny temp gauge setup. I'm not sure how effective it is, but I bet it cools pretty good when I flip that switch.

The fan is wired up now.

446 fix up

Greg, fix what ever needs fixing, and I would definately agree with the idea of a cam change. I've though your cam was too small for your engine from day one. Sell the '521 to someone with a 352 and get a '541, at least. There is a nice stroker on the net somewhere (422, 4.110 x3.98 ) that was running a flatappet cam that has 236* at .050....less inches and less stroke than you have, but even with a larger cam than your engine, it was running out of air at 6K. It made 505 horse power though. Something to think about. DF, @ his Dad's house
