Ocasionally in a heavy rain my Expedition will have transmission problems. It will either simpley act like it is in neutral or it will not shift out of low gear even though it is in the drive position. Next the dash lights will start blinking and the overdrive on/off button light on the shifter will blink on and off.
After the vehicle ''dries out'' the tranny and light will work fine except for the air-bag light stays on. I know this sounds like an electrical problem, but does anyone know where to start?
Sounds like the GEM module is getting wet to me. I had the same exact symptoms, although it's been several weeks since it cropped up. I have purchased a new GEM from Ford (~$250) but have not yet installed it since the old one is again working once it dried out.
BTW, this is typically, as said above, from a leak at the windshield letting water down to the GEM/Fuse box area. I never had this problem in the 4 years I've owned my truck until I had the windshield replaced last fall by Giant Glass. They've been back to reseal it once already because water was actually coming into the cabin up from under the glass and splashing me while driving... I'm sure your leak is nothing like that, but still a few drips into the GEM is all it takes.
Definately leaking windshield.... I have a 1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer and after each heavy rain storm I would have several differant electrical problems. I had my windshield replaced and all the issues went away. The only issue that stayed for about a month then just disappeared was my airbag light stayed on. Happy to say $200 for a new windshield fixed every electrical issue and I didnt have to replace the GEM module.
Thanks to all for the info. I checked some fuses and three were blown. I replaced two and everything was fine, but when I replaced the third the fuse box sparked up like the 4th of July! To the Ford service folks we go!!!! New GEM module, fuse box, new seal for the windshield, and 8 bills later----I'm back on the road. Thanks for the input. The info. was right on the money!
