Exclamation Excursion OD tranny question

I'm a new X owner. Just bought an 00' 7.3 Excursion with 90K miles. Great vehicle but when I drove the 400 mile trip home periodically when I backed off the throttle in overdrive I would feel some slop or slack in the drivetrain. It didn't do it all the time. Is this typical of this trans with 90K miles on it or should I expect trouble? Since in overdrive it locks up I guess there's no bands to tighten if that at all possible. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Keep an eye on it cause there has been a lot of issues with the transmission. My problems started out with roughly the same issues as you are having. Then the OD light on the shifter started blinking and it wouldn’t shift into 2nd. I have a 01 X PSD and have had my transmission repaired 2 times then finally replaced under warranty and now I have 50K on the odometer. Issues ranged from stuck/frozen solenoid valves to bad sensors. The stuck solenoids was what finally did in the tranny. I haven’t had any problems sense replacement (knock on wood). Do a search on here and you will find alot of the same issues. Good luck...

sonex122, One of the first things I would do after purchasing a used X would be to replace the tranny fluid, including the fluid in the torque converter. I regularly tow a heavy trailer and I have my fluid changed every other year. It might be overkill, but so far I have had no tranny issues. Worth the $$ to me.

The TC unlocks when you let off the throttle. I wonder if there is a way to modify the program so that it doesn't immediately unlock.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the great feedback. Flushing the trans and putting in new fluid tops my list. I'd guess you'd need a chip/tuner to keep the OD from unlocking when you let off the throttle.

There's a tech article on flushing the trans fluid that makes it really easy.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...nsmission.html

While you're at it, there is an accumulator spring and valve upgrade to firm up the shifts. I did all of this last weekend and am very pleased with the results. About $150.00 and 3-1/2 hours. Well worth the effort.

I'm getting ready to flush mine next week. I'm installing the Sonnex valve also. If you are going to do any big mods I would definately get the sonnex kit.
I got mine from blackclouddiesel

Question

Thanks guys! The article mentions not using Mercon V in place of Mercon. I believe Mercon V is semi-synthetic. Does anyone know if you can use a 100 % synthetic, such as Amzoil, safely in place of Mercon. Amzoil says it's okay but also says it's dual use for Mercon and Mercon V and Ford say no to the dual use fluids. It's very confusing! Has anyone used synthetic in a 4R100?

There a few people over at thediselstop that run Mobil 1, but from what I have heard the synthetic's advantage over the regular fluid is that it doesnt break down as fast under high heat. How much towing are you going to be doing, or traveling up high grades? Too me its way more practical to stick with regular changes of Mercon grade fluid instead of spending alot of extra money on a full syn. Thats me though.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF because it is MERCON and not MERCON V rated. That's what the 4R100 needs.

Royal purple is also. The more and more I read and dig on this I may end up just paying the extra and maybe switch to Royal Purple when I get a new cooler.
