Driver's window will go down, but not up unless we pull it up by hand. When the window is all the way up, or all the way down, when the motor used to just stop, now the motor keeps running and I hear a thump, thump, thump.
I've taken the door panel off hoping I could see something broken, but the motor isn't even visible. Has this happened to anyone and do they know what is wrong? I don't want to just start replacing hard to get to parts.
I think you might have a broken drive gear in the motor itself.I`m not sure if they sell replacement gears or not.I had the same thing happen to both doors on my `79 Mark V.I think a new motor is bout $40-$60,and there erally hard to get it,there allll the way on the bottom of the door with really no way to get at them. Also if you fix it,grease the tracks, thats mainly why they go out because the dry tracks put an extra load on the motor/gears,good luck.
This is a common problem with Ford electric window motors. If you take the door panel off and look at the steel inner panel, you will see indentions in the panel that locates where the the bolts that hold the window motor in place are. You will need a 7/16-1/2" drill bit to drill these holes and be big enough for the 5/16" deep dwell 1/4" drive socket needed to remove motor. Once motor is removed you will see three screws that hold the "gear cover" in place, remove them, now you will see a large gear (white) that has a triangular recess that holds the gear that allows the actual window to go up & down. Remove this triangular gear (also plastic but with metal gear for window movement) and you will see three chewed up round pieces of nylon plastic, remove the chewed up plastic pieces. Take six 1/4" X 20 nuts and install TWO each, standing up, in each of the triangular recessed corners of the larger gear and re-install smaller gear(one with the metal gear). Coat inside with a little grease and re-install cover then re-install into door. Put a little grease in the socket to hold the bolts in place while you try to line up window motor. I was told of this fix by a Ford mechanic and I have 12 years on this fix on my '82 F-250 4x4 and no problems yet, and it's a heck of a lot cheaper.
I hope this helps in any way>
I had the gear drive go out on an 1986 Crown Victoria. I got a new set of gears at an Advance Auto Parts store. eems like the kit was about $12.00. Much less than the entire motor assembly.
Since you do hear the motor running, I'm sure that the gear set will do the job. Rather than re-rivetig the motor back in, I just used some bolts, flat washers, and fiberlocking nuts.
