I am posting this for a friend. The vehicle is a 98 explorer v6 4x4 auto tranny. somewhere around 110,000 miles. He was going to back it out of his driveway. He put it in reverse, and heard a pop. now he has no reverse, but forward gears work. does the tranny need a complete rebuild or is there something easier that could be the problem?. he told me he would sell it to me for a good price since he isn't really a ford person. If the tranny does need rebuilt, how expensive of a job is this? I don't really have $2000 to sink into a tranny right now. how hard is an explorer tranny to pull/replace? if i do buy it,thinking I could save some money by pulling the tranny myself and taking it to a tranny shop to have it rebiult. thanks for the advice,Ben
Replaced my tranny 98 5.0L AWD from Ford for $1500.00 rebuilt unit. Went to dealer and got it by using my friends account for wholesale. I was loosing reverse also. Fluid change did not help. Swapped in yard in a couple of days. I would do it again.
Ben, the 98 has a 5R55E transmission. If you drop the trans pan, you'll see the low/reverse servo cover on the passenger side, toward the rear of the trans. It's held on with 4 bolts, and when removed, you have access to the servo, O-ring, and spring.
If you wanted to pull the pan and take a look at the low/reverse servo, it wouldn't take much time. I suspect it's more than just the servo though, since there was a noise when reverse failed.....
