1997 F150 transmission fitment

Got a buddy that has a 97 F150 4x4 extra cab. He had a 4.6 but had the next larger engine, 5.2? installed but still had the auto trans for the 4.6. I think he was have tranny problems before the engine swap, anyway, the tranny stopped going into reverse. Eventually it only shifts into 2nd gear.

So, he found a tranny and transfer case from a 98 Explorer for the 5.2 (what ever is the next size up from the 4.6) He and another friend removed the old tranny and xfr case but then found that the one he was going to put in is 6" too long. My friend is not really a wrench turner, he is an electrician. So he is under the impression that he needs to get another tranny for the 4.6 or find one out of a F150 with the larger engine.

I'm a "backyard mechanic" working on 71 F250 and a 83 Jeep right now. I think, he can put in the tranny / xfr case from the 98 Explorer and either see if the drive shafts from a 98 Explorer will just slip right into the F150 extended cab or, get his driveshafts lengthened / shortened as needed.

if anyone has done this or tried or have been successful at such a swap, please chime in.

thanks
