Sorry for the late post, but I just got out in the garage after work tonight. After digging and looking with a brand spanking new LED flashlight (amazing what good lighting can do) I found out you are certainly correct. I'll try not to doubt you again.
There were another set of wires in the door pillar with the correct plug - AND - the remaining piece of the original switch which had broken off. The weird part is the remaining piece on the switch looks like you can take a "bullet" type terminal and attach it.
I did install both new switches and amazingly enough I now have light when opening the doors.

This is a great piece of information. My passenger side does nothing, the switch if you push on it, it seems to function just like the driver's side, but nothing. So I will be tearing into it here soon! Sounds like someone is up for some rep points!!!
