I have done a variation of this when I was an early teenager. But I only did it with fish that I could see. One word of warning if someone hasn't already mentioned it...
When you grab a catfish be aware that they have very sharp spines in several places, the tips of the two from fins and the fin on their back come to mind. You can get a very nasty sting and some possible infection from these and sometimes they break off in your meat, kind of like glass barbs. I have been stung more than a few times, it hurts.
The fact that my grandfather "forced" me to catch so many catfish this way("he liked his fish unstressed due to normal fishing tackle", yeah right) has caused permanent psychological damage to me. To this day, more than 25 years later, I hate catfish and won't eat em. I hear they are good, but can't make myself do it.
Snapping turtles are nothing to mess with unless they are in soup. They do like the same kinds of places as a big cat so reaching into a cave looking for cats can get your a snap.
I've never eaten snapping turtle but both my parents loved to eat it. The meat looks like lean pork, but I don't know how to clean one. It looks like excellent stew meat though.
I'm from Tulsa and have known several guys who noodle. We also have Gar(lots of teeth)here and some damn big snappers not to mention snakes. I think you need to be a few bricks short of a full load to enjoy this type of fishing.
I don't think I have eaten turtle soup as an adult but I have been told it is tasty. I think I ate turtle soup when I was little. I even have a few cook books with recipes for turtle soup. Everyone who has eaten some and or written about it, like it. I would be delighted to try some but they are scarce in the Great Northwet. Besides, my kinds would probably turn it into a pet.
Read the postings under general conversation, "Snap Turtles and hub cap sources..." Some of the guys talk about how to prepare em. Sounds good.
