This is going to sound like a dumb question but it never occurred to me before:
How do I tell if there is a chip in my truck?
I picked a buddy this weekend for a night out who had not seen my new truck yet. He noticed the boost and pyrometer gauges on the A pillar and asked me if it has a chip in it. I said no, but it made me think. I realize that I just considered the truck to be stock without really investigating.
I bought my truck from the estate of a friend of mine who died at the end of last year. His family has no idea what mods he did to the truck. So no help there.
He had done a lot to the truck such as adding a monster Nakamichi quad-amplified stereo, 9k winch, trailer brakes, Rancho shocks, larger tires. Maybe he had put in a chip. (I didn't even realize the shocks were adjustable until a FTE user pointed it out to me!)
Smeezy is correct. Also if it actually has a chip (not had a tuner used on it) you can see it hanging out of the pcm behind the e brake pedal. The plastic cover of the pcm will be cut out to expose it.
I have the exact model you do with some mods. I have a chip and see around 30psi. My guess is no chip. Sounds like your work is half done. You have the proper equipment for the chip, just need to purchase one. I highly recommend one (its like waking a sleeping giant).
You got that right HP Junkie, I couldn't have said it better myself, when I put the Diablo 3 position chip on my beast, it really changed the animal, it's a completely different truck, I can easily punch 25-30 PSI and get my 38's rocking in no time.
Its a good idea to go with a new exhaust and intake. But more important is gauges, mainly a pyrometer to measure exhaust temps. You wont get the full poential from a chip/tuner without breathing better. My opinon is start with guages, so you know a baseline of your truck, and then go from there. Then you better know what your truck is doing with each mod. I wish I would have done it that way.
Ok duh.... I just read the first post, and ya got gauges. I'm not awake yet! Go for a chip/tuner. Watch your egt's and you can add the exhaust later. either way, sounds like you set-up!
ltfox - well I do have the gauges but the pyro does not work. It is on the list of things to track down when it gets a bit warmer. (truck with a high camper-top doesn't fit in my garage!)
I don't know what brand of gauges they are but is the somewhere I should start looking for the pyrometer failure?

Very often, the chip will be under the cover and you won't see it unless you slide the cover off.
Plus, if it's got a flash in it there will be no chip to see.
The pyro gauge does not respond at all. The boost guage works fine as does the illumination in both gauges...
Just another thing I'll have to fuss with in my spare time, like you said, check the simple stuff first.
