Shrieking, no more engine start

I'm assuming I ground my starter gear and/or flywheel teeth completely off, but figured I'd post. The truck made a horrible shrieking noise from under the passenger side where the starter is, and the truck doesn't turn over at all anymore. It's a 1985 F150 with 351W and C6. What will need to be done? If flywheel is shot, will I have to drop tranny, etc?

LAST EDITED ON 24-May-01 AT 04:11 PM (EST)[p]If it is no longer making any noise at all then it have been a bearing seizing in the starter. So first pull the starter then look at the flywheel teeth.

You might have stopped the engine in a spot on the flexplate with no more teeth. What you can tray nad do is turn the engine a few inches by hand crank to get past the missing teeth.

That is unless you fryed the starter teeth.

I would pull the starter and look at the engagement point on the flexplate. Look for missing teeth.

Yep! Pulling the starter is the first thing to do. Check the starter and the teeth on the flexplate. I have had the starter go bad in the past and not damage the teeth the plate. Hopefully this is the case with your truck. Good luck.

All right, the flywheel teeth and starter gear teeth are fine. After pulling the starter, the pinion on the starter has play in it from side to side, and it appeared that the metal rod that supported the pinion gear (?) was no longer held in place, as the thing circular bearing (? facing towards the rear of the engine block when installed) was broken. Here's my issue - when turning the pinion by hand it sound gritty, and there was plenty of grime and dirt inside the starter and bellhousing. The shroud or cover, whatever it's called, between the engine and bellhousing is not the original, it's just a cut piece of aluminum. There's a good 1-2" gap between the starter and the engine block, which I guess is allowing all sorts of mud and water to enter the bellhousing when I go off road. Should I bother just installing a new starter, or would it make more sense to get a true cover for the bellhousing first? Why is there all that extra bellhousing anyway?
