Guys my father in law has a Accel super coil he doesn't like and I am pretty sure I can get it. My question is I have just had the crane cams points to electronic conversion kit put in my truck on a 302 by the way. Will this coil help me any will it hurt my kit i just put in Also do I need the ballast with the coil or can you run it without it. From what I read it says you need it with the points all help is definately needed here. Thanks you guys for all the help.
Keith
Keith,
I can't answer all of your questions, because I haven't been there and done that. However, I would like to share one experience I had to maybe prevent you from having the same problem that I run in to. As opposed to doing the points conversion that you did, I changed my distributor to a Ford duraspark from a points distributor. I hooked it up to an MSD ignition module and an MSD blaster coil. The directions with the coil said to drill a hole in the distributor cap to let the heat out of it. I don't remember what size hole it called for now, but it was a very small hole. I did not drill the hole based on the fact that I did not want to have a way for moisture to get in to it. As a result I built up a lot of heat that cracked the magnetic pick up in my distributor. I run a factory type coil now with the ford duraspark distributor and the MSD ignition module with no problems now. The upside to using the hot coil and aftermarket ignition module is my truck started up every time by just bumping the key just like it was fuel injected. I would say go ahead and add the coil, but read the directions carefully. If they call for a hole in the cap to let off heat, you would be better advised to make sure that you put one there. I don't know how much one of those crane electronic conversion kits are, or how hard they are to put in. I am sure that you probably don't want to cook them.
I hope this helped at least some.
Mike
Mike they are actually inexpensive $65.00 and about 20 minutes work and you are done. It runs good the way it is I just want to slowly start beefing up my truck this is the reason for the coil.
Thanks
Keith
If you don't have points, you shouldn't need the ballast resistor. But if it's the "old style" super coil,I don't know if it's gonna be of any advantage to the electronic ignition, though I doubt it will hurt.I'm just thinking you might not get the full advantage.
