I think I may have the camshaft tensioner issue on my truck but I'm not too sure. Would someone be able to describe in detail what the symptoms are? How loud is the sound?
My truck is out of warranty on this so does anyone konw the approximat cost of having these TSB's done?
One last question: Is it safe to keep driving the truck with this issue? I'm planning on a trip up north this summer with it, but I don't know if I can afford to have this work done.
Sorry for all the questions, there really should be a sticky about this topic.
Do you have the 4.0 SOHC motor? If so the noise should only be on startup, if tesioner is sticky (TSB report). Noise is not that load and should disapear after a few minutes of the engine running. I guess it sounds like a muted can of marbles. You can drive wit hit, would not recommend going long distance if noise does not disappear after startup.
The upper tensioner covered under the recal is cheap to replace (less than $500). The lower one is not. Repairs can cost in the $2,000 range.
It's in the shop now for the big job. (Lower guide) As a matter of fact it will be two weeks this Monday that they have had it. I have an extended warranty to cover the job, so I should be okay. I hope.
Thanks.
Yes, I've got the SOHC motor. I don't think I hear the noise at startup but I do seem to be hearing a quiet ratteling at between 2k and 3k RPM.
Guess I should have the delear look to see which one it is if that is possible...otherwise I might look at leasing a new truck with a warranty.
JF5speed, I bought an 02 explorer with 4L. and just had the new tensioners put in. So I would say yes they still have the problem. My truck has 40K on it.

I have a 99 ex and It makes the same noise all the time that it does at start up. My wife drove it today and said she couldn't here herself think driving it. I am getting rid of it. I am tired of having tensioners replaced. I like fords over chevy but this timing chain crap is getting old. I am looking at the 2002 models as I am having my 3rd child and need more room anyway. Here is my question guys. Is that 4.0 sohc in the 2002 the same damn motor that is in my 99 and if I am deciding between and explorer and an expedition which one is less trouble free and with the explorers should I just make sure to get the v8 and not be bothered with any of the v6 sohc problems? Please let me know if anyone has an opinion and I am shopping for the suv now. I went and looked and both expe and expl today both with 3rd row seating I like both any thoughts about the size of both 3rd row seats. Appreciate the feed back.
I have an 02 explorer that I just got done replacing the chain and front tensioner on at 40k miles. I have read somewhere on here that if you are considering an explorer it had better have the 4.6L v8. I don't know if the mileage is much different but in my f-150 I only pull about 11-12 city and maybe 16 highway. I average 16.6 with my 4.0L on short drives back and forth to town or for my wife to go to work. The 3rd seat in an explorer is good for kids. I wouldn't put my parents or friends (atleast not the good ones) back there. Again though great for kids. I personally don't think after hearing what the dealership told me that the problem with the chains is close to fixed but I could be wrong.

I thought after you fixed it once you were done???? you mean the tensioners keep going bad and they do-not have a good fix???
We own a '98 Explorer. We recently had the "Cam Shaft" experience." Ours was more with the guides. Apparently the original guides were a one peice part. Now the only ones available are two pieces. Ford told us we were out of waranty and there "Were no replacement parts to repair" our car. This is insane. We ended up replacing the engine. We are in the market for a new S.U. V. Believe me it will not be a Ford.
I just had mine done a couple of months ago, and they replaced the guides, tensioners, and chain. Mine is a 2000 model, but it should be the same as yours. Thankfully I had the warranty to cover the repair, because the bill was for $1900.00! I can only imagine what you had to pay for the entire engine.
My Explorer is a 1998. Two Ford dealers in San Diego, Ca and a NAPA auto parts said that there were no parts to replace the guides in our car. It did not make sense because how could they build the car if there were no parts. The only guides anyone had were two-piece guides and ours was a one peice guide. Maybe they changed them by the 2000 model.
