Dear Ford

1) Advance your timing until your truck begins to knock on hard acceleration, then back off 1-2 degrees.

2) Side gap the plugs (about a 10% increase in mileage on my 351W)

3) I had great mileage with my 2.73 rear gears and still had pretty good grunt for towing when I had the 300.

4) Get a good road tread on your tires, keep them inflated properly

5) Replace your stock fan with an electric fan.

6) Aftermarket ignitions are great, (I've got an MSD 6A), slap in a new distributor or get yours rebuilt while you're at it.

7) An OD tranny will help a lot. (anything to keep the rpms down)

8) Open the exhaust (headers or at least a cat-back), hi-flow cat, no muffler or a hi-flow muffler

9) Check and correct vacuum leaks

10) Rebuild the carb, try running a little leaner

11) Synthetic oil, tranny fluid, and rearend fluid

Dear Ford

Y'know Slik, with the price of gas nowadays, a 10 percent increase in mileage (or anything close to it) may off-set the cost of plug replacement.

Have you run the side-gapped plugs long enough to estimate how much their service life is shortened?

w/ 81 F-100, I6, SROD, Carter 1V non-feedback carb, no A/C, no PS, no PB, but it gets me where I need to go

ok, another stupid question. what is side gapping and how do you do it?

Dear Ford

I suggest run your tires over-inflated by about six pounds. The pressure stamped on the side of the tire is for a "soft" ride.
