Hi all,im desperate for some help i have a 1997 sohc Explorer and ever since i've had a new engine fitted my o/d light has been intermittently flashing. The light wont be flashing, but 5 miles down the road mostly when i go over 60mph the light comes on and the truck shifts hard and there is a whinning sound coming from underneath. When i have finished work and go home the light will go off again after a few miles and then come on again.I took it too ford who told me there were no DTC's detected !!.I have since got my own scanner and it still says there are no codes stored even with the light flashing. When the light doesn't flash it shifts ok and there is no bad noises. Please Help
What work did you have done on the engine? Was it pulled out? I'm by no means a trans expert, but if the engine was out, it could be a flex plate or converter issue. Hopefully, you are taking it back to the same place that did the motor.
My son has a 2002 with 50000 miles. His light flashed for about a week, then the trans went completly out. It won't move, just makes grinding noises. The dealer can't get started on it till this Wed. They suspect third gear bands are bad. I'll let you know when we find out somthing.
Thanx xfordman,im taking mine to be looked at today,so i will post on here what they have found !!! Let me know the outcome of your son's,the more info the better....
I have experienced the slipping from 2nd to 3rd gear and the flashing o/d light.Took it to transmission shop. The following is what fixed my problem so far.
Master overhaul kit $287.00
Converter $295.00
Servo Pistons $47.20
Sep. Plate $26.00
Valve Kit $27.60
Redirect Exhaust(to close to pan)
Remove/install trans, converter,transfer case $364.80
Bench overhaul $653.60
Total bill was $1766.78. Third party warranty paid this amount.I paid $100.00 deductable.Dealership absorbed the remain $235.00.
This vehicle had 152,000 K when this all transpired.Owned the vehicle for two weeks.
I had the same flashing o/d light too. Same story as others, would shift fine until light starts flashing, then shifts hard when light flashes and goes to cripple mode. Unfortunately, I heard the same whining noise about 5 seconds before the tranny went. Now I have no forward or reverse. Will be getting it fixed this week hopefully.
Well, I got my transmission fixed and it's back on the road. Apparently, the torque convertor failed, which subsequently took out the pump. My wife picked up the car so I didn't see the failed parts. Required a complete teardown to get all the metal chunks out. $1300. My suggestion is if your O/D light starts to flash, get the torque convertor checked out. I'm wondering if I didn't accelerate the failure when I put new fluid in it about 300 miles before it completely failed.
I have now had my tranny looked at and apparently its the TCC solenoid,im hopefully picking it up monday.Fingers crossed it will be sorted now,i will keep you all informed...
Here we are two months after tranny rebuild. Not even a blink from o/d idiot light. Its taking a little getting use to the shifting this transmission goes through.Like this vehicle a lot.
